Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP)
The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) works on behalf of over 9,000 diverse planning professionals and has supported Canada’s planning community since 1919. Located in Ottawa, Ontario, CIP is a member-based organization for planning professionals across Canada and beyond. Their members work in both the public service and the private sector, across fields such as land use planning, environmental resource management, land development, Indigenous community development, heritage conservation, social planning, transportation planning, and economic development.
It is with this context that CIP is seeking an exceptional leader as its next Chief Executive Officer, to lead the organization and be a dynamic advocate on behalf of planners across the country.
Reporting directly to the Board, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the senior corporate manager of CIP, provides leadership to staff, advice to the Board of Directors and is the external face and voice of the organization. The CEO is responsible to ensure the organization, and its members are represented effectively to a diverse group of interest and rights holders domestically and internationally, including government, media, and the general public. The CEO will also align with the Institute’s core values including an emphasis on Indigenous reconciliation, climate change, healthy communities, housing and Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility. The CEO works closely with the President and the Board’s Executive Committee and oversees the CIP / ICU Planning Student Trust Fund (CIP-PSTF), a federally registered charitable organization and the CIP-PSTF’s Board of Directors in the execution of its governance responsibilities and delivery of scholarship programs.
As the ideal candidate, you are a skilled leader and passionate advocate with experience guiding organizations through change and towards ambitious strategic goals. You understand how to represent and position an organization with external audiences as a credible voice, are comfortable being the primary representative to a variety of interest and rights holders, including the media, government and general public, and have experience working with a Board of Directors. As a manager and leader, you are team-oriented, resourceful, inclusive, and committed to the mentorship and professional development of staff. Colleagues value your strategic perspective, confidence and passionate representation skills and regularly call on you for advice on all matters requiring a sophisticated advocacy, member relations or governance lens. At the Board table, you are an active and engaged participant, voicing concerns, sharing ideas, and proactively providing options for the members to consider. Bilingualism (English / French) would be considered an asset for this role.
CIP is strongly committed to a diverse, inclusive, and accessible workplace and strives to maintain a positive, collaborative work environment that fosters personal and professional growth for all employees. CIP is also committed to the health and safety of our staff, members, stakeholders, and the communities where we live and work.
We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those under consideration for the role will be contacted.
