Job description

Position: Nurse Practitioner
Department: Community Mental Health and Addictions

Reporting to the Manager of Community Mental Health & Addictions at the King Street Campus, the Nurse Practitioner will work in collaboration with the Addiction Medicine Consult Team (AMCT) and Hospital Withdrawal Management Services (HWMS) at NBRHC main site and will provide direct support to individuals admitted to the Community Withdrawal Management Service (CWMS) King Street Campus. Functioning within the Standards of Practice for Extended Class as set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), the NP will work in collaboration with physicians, nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary team to initiate withdrawal management protocols, treatment pathways, and to develop and implement care plans, ensuring optimal care for patients at the NBRHC and King Street Campus..

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class {RN (EC)} and with a specialty certificate in either Adult or Primary Health Care required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) certificate required (within the last 12 months)
  • Recent clinical experience (within last 2 years) in a mental health and/or addictions setting preferred
  • Demonstrated competencies related to safe, effective and ethical prescribing required
  • Successful completion of controlled substance education and ability to prescribe controlled substances required
  • Current Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing certification an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement basic and advanced educational programs required
  • Experience with substance use interventions (i.e. Motivational Interviewing (MI), Stages of Change) an asset

Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with all members of an Interdisciplinary health care team which includes clients, families and community partners required
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education and quality improvement to facilitate, integrate and spread best practice principles in mental health and addictions required
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise professional judgement and critical thinking required
  • Demonstrated ability to apply ethical frameworks and choose the optimal assessment and treatment intervention required
  • Demonstrated strong therapeutic communication skills with the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in a clear, concise manner, considering the intended audience required
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload, rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines required
  • Ability to meet the physical demands required for a community based team required
  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention to ensure the safety of self, fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Excellent attendance and work record required
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
