Job Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Transit Facilities Maintenance, this role provides oversight and leadership to the afternoon and night shift unionized in-house facility staff (Building & Route Team – B&R). The position is responsible for ensuring that both Transit Garage facilities (CPY Garage and Malton Garage), as well as on-street bus stop infrastructure, are properly maintained and support the needs of facility users, transit customers, and service operations. Please note that this role is assigned to an overnight shift from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, and will require working a daytime shift for up to three months for training purposes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction to afternoon and night shift unionized in-house facility staff (B&R), ensuring alignment with operational objectives, maintenance standards, and safety requirements.
  • Oversee the maintenance workflow, including work order generation, assignment of tasks, scheduling of repairs and preventive maintenance (PM), supervision of staff activities, setting performance expectations, monitoring productivity, ensuring quality and timely completion of work, and tracking all tasks within a CMMS/EAM system.
  • Administer progressive discipline to unionized staff as required, maintaining a thorough working knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and corporate policies to ensure fair and consistent application.
  • Assist the Supervisor in monitoring employee attendance, including vacations, sick days, floater days; recommend overtime when necessary and ensure adequate staffing coverage across all shifts in response to absences.
  • Dispatch and coordinate on-street bus stop infrastructure requests to road staff, including stop relocations, installations, removals, and modifications; support Board Period service changes; ensure timely implementation; track completion status; liaise with internal stakeholders; manage road-related inventory.
  • Respond to facility-related issues including electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and other building systems. Conduct initial assessments to determine root cause, operational impact, and whether corrective actions can be completed in-house or require external contractor support.
    • For in-house repairs, ensure required parts and materials are available, schedule work activities, and assign tasks to appropriate in-house staff while balancing operational and maintenance priorities.
    • For contractor-performed repairs, create service requests, provide site access to contractors, act as the on-site liaison, ensure contractor compliance with MiWay policies and safety procedures, monitor work progress, and provide updates to facility users.
  • Maintain and manage inventory management databases to ensure accurate tracking of all parts and materials. Responsibilities also include sourcing and procuring parts, updating inventory records, monitoring usage and stock levels, forecasting demands, conducting regular inventory audits, and optimizing stock availability to minimize downtime.
  • Support health and safety initiatives by ensuring compliance with OHSA and corporate safety policies, participate in Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) inspections, address and resolve JHSC findings, implement corrective and preventive actions, and promoting safe work practices.
  • Coordinate and assess ad-hoc facility improvement requests from facility users, evaluating operational feasibility, safety implications, cost considerations, and resource requirements to support evolving business needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Completion of secondary school is required; a college diploma or university degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in facility maintenance, with technical knowledge and hands-on experience in building systems such as electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and roofing.
  • Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting building system issues, coordinating, and overseeing repairs and PMs with external contractors/in-house staff, supporting preventative, corrective and emergency maintenance, and tracking within CMMS/EAM systems is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislative, codes, and standards governing buildings (e.g., Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Electrical Safety Code, Occupational Health & Safety Act).
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements to ensure compliance, mitigate risk, and maintain safe and efficient transit facility operations.
  • Leadership experience in a unionized environment is an asset, particularly in work coordination, staff oversight, discipline, and interpretation of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and asset management systems such as Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and strong decision-making abilities, with the capacity to assess risk, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions promptly.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, complemented by strong organizational and time management skills.
  • A valid class G Ontario driver’s license with a clean driving record acceptable to the City is required.
