What is the project?
The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment program involves designing and building a new deep-water intake in Lake Ontario to improve the plant's cooling system. This will involve:
- A 1.5 km-long tunnel, built by a pressurized TBM (10.15 m diameter slurry TBM);
- Two vertical shafts (onshore and offshore);
- An offshore modular intake structure, resting on the lake bed.
The project is distinguished by its proximity to an active nuclear site, requiring rigorous standards of safety, planning and coordination.
What you will do:
The Health & Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing and managing the H&S program while ensuring compliance with H&S legislation. They will conduct trainings for management and staff and provide recommendations on augmenting the performance of H&S initiatives and plans.
Concretely, your tasks will be:
- Act in a leading role in the development, implementation and management of the Health & Safety program
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
- Develop, refine and maintain organizational health and safety programs and strategies to prevent workplace injuries
- Influence and assist companywide in the implementation of Health & Safety training initiatives
- Conduct and create training and communication for management and staff using internal and external resources on Health & Safety
- Provide regular reporting and recommendations to senior management on health and safety statistics and performance
- Improve the level of excellence in the company’s Health & Safety programs and performance
- Identify and anticipate health and safety concerns and hazards by surveying environmental, operational, and occupational conditions; investigates violations & recommends preventative programs
- Coordinate facility audits and set audit standards
- Assist in the daily meetings to report all field incidents
- Analyse the safety incidents and the environment of construction
- Propose improved methods of construction
- Organise regular emergency drills to maintain a quick and efficient emergency response
- Minimum of 15 years experience in the construction industry, preferably on large infrastructure projects
- Knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
- COR Auditor training is preferred
- Strong communication skills
- Exhibit strong time management skills
- High attention to detail and proactive approach to problem-solving
- Demonstrate practical knowledge of current health and safety legislation
- Proven experience in tunneling or underground works, preferably with TBM operations
- Familiarity with safety management systems and incident reporting tools
- Experience working on projects with high-risk environments (nuclear, offshore, or similar)
