Applications are invited for the regular part-time position of ALS Health Science Lab Technologist in the School of Academic and Liberal Studies. The starting salary is $27.96 / hr for a 24-hour work week, 10 months per year from September to June. Additional hours may be required at peak times during the year, such as the start or end of term. The position is located at the Welland Campus.
Reporting to the Associate Dean, School of Academic and Liberal Studies, the successful candidate will ensure the organization, maintenance, and safe operation of the teaching laboratory for all activities related to the Pre-Health Science program in the Academic and Liberal Arts and Sciences division. In cooperation with the course professors, the incumbent will demonstrate, supervise, and provide assistance with practical lab work.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to :
- Liaising with faculty to plan and coordinate lab execution
- Executing the preparation, set up, and take down of all biology, chemistry, and physics labs
- Creating and editing lab outlines on a semester-by-semester basis to reflect improvements in labs
- Demonstrating proper procedures and use of equipment to faculty and students
- Training and supervising student assistants
- Completing regular maintenance and repair, or replacement when necessary
- Managing all chemical and equipment inventories and order replacements when required
- Coordinating the purchasing, receiving, and documentation of laboratory supplies and equipment
- Sourcing new resources or equipment by request
- Storing laboratory chemicals and supplies in the proper category according to regulations
- Ensuring proper organization, maintenance, and operation of the laboratory
- Recommending purchases for capital equipment
- Manage budget and create a monthly expense report
- Managing student WHMIS reports in coordination with faculty
- Performing and documenting safety inspections and testing of safety equipment regularly
- Updating the Academic Safety Plan in cooperation with the Academic Business Manager when required
- Maintaining SDS database for all chemicals used
- Storing and disposing of Hazmat material according to MOE regulations by liaising with the disposal company
- Monitoring security, safety, and housekeeping, and reporting infractions
- Developing, delivering, and overseeing safety training and protocols for all students and staff
