Your Opportunity:

The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research, and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually from western and northern Canada. The hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including specialized adult services within cardiac sciences, neurosciences, surgery, medicine, orthopedics, renal, critical care, burns, transplant and trauma inpatient programs as well as, a vast number of ambulatory clinics. This position contributes to the care of patients in the medicine program which consists of 14 units and includes the following services, General Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Pulmonary, Hematology and Geriatrics/Neurology. The program utilizes a collaborative care model (COACT) for patient care and Connect Care by Epic for the patient's electronic medical record. The program has a team of Clinical Nurse Educators and Clinical Nurse Specialist to support new hire orientation, training in specialized areas and ongoing professional development and initiatives. We strive to utilize evidence based practice and quality improvement initiatives to improve patient and family experiences and outcomes.

Description:

As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team providing personal assistance including supporting activities of daily living and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this position you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities assisting nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs, assisting with organized activities or programs and observing and reporting on a patient's mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under a regulated health professional you will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification.

Additional Required Qualifications:

HCA registration must be current and up to date with the CLHA. Current Basic Life Support (BLS - Heart and Stroke AED Level C). Must the able to work to full scope of practice (physically, mentally and emotionally) on this very busy fast paced Unit. Must be able to push, pull and lift at least 50 lbs.
