Temple Har Zion

Religious School Teacher (Part-time Role)

Temple Har Zion (THZ) is a vibrant and inclusive Reform Jewish institution committed to fostering a sense of community, promoting spiritual growth, and engaging individuals of all backgrounds. We are currently seeking Religious School Teachers who can educate our students in various aspects of Jewish culture, traditions, values, and Israel. Our Beit Midrash program (grades K-6) takes place on Sunday mornings from 9:15am-12:30pm, September until May. Our Beit Noar program (grades 7-9) takes place on Monday evenings from 5:45-8:00pm, September until May.

Our teachers are responsible for planning and delivering engaging lessons, managing classes, and communicating with parents within the framework of the curriculum and common expectations that are provided by the school and the Director of Education.

Implementing Curriculum and School Directives

  • Develop unit plans and lessons based on the curriculum and directives of the Director of Education
  • Strive to create varied and engaging learning experiences for students
  • Ensure that lessons and activities foster strong Jewish identity, positivity, and inclusion.
  • All planning and content should support the protocols and values of our Reform Jewish community
  • Work collaboratively with all staff to plan and deliver special programs and large group activities
  • Work with other educators, guardians, students, and support staff to ensure that reasonable accommodations are made to meet the learning needs of all students.

Teaching and Managing Class

  • Create and maintain reasonable class rules, expectations, and routines to ensure all students feel safe and included.
  • Create and maintain reasonable class rules, expectations, and routines which foster appropriate student behaviour, interaction, engagement, and learning.
  • Teach in a professional manner that best fosters student engagement and learning
  • Record student attendance and monitor student involvement and task completion.
  • Attend and manage your class during activities that are led by other staff
  • Attend any field trips that take place during school hours
  • Make all efforts to attend special events that are outside of school hours but are a replacement of regularly scheduled school hours.

Accountability and Communication

  • Communicate issues with student behaviour and/or performance with the Director of Education and with guardians.
  • Communicate with guardians concerning any work or tasks to be completed at home

Other duties and expectations

  • Plan for and practice one D’var Torah presentation with your class
  • Attend your class D’var Torah presentation at the Friday evening Service on which it is scheduled.
  • Attend Staff Orientation at the beginning of the school year (during regular school hours)
  • Attend a Professional Activity Day on the Sunday after Shabbat Shirah (during regular school hours)

Qualifications

  • Teaching Skills: A keen understanding of how to create meaningful and engaging lessons for specific age groups, adhering to curriculum guidelines. The ability to actively and effectively engage, explain, and clarify information for children.
  • Communication Skills: Outstanding communication skills, capable of effectively conveying messages to colleagues, guardians, and students.
  • Classroom Management Skills: The ability to confidently use a wide variety of pedagogical tools to manage student behaviour and interactions. Excellent organizational skills to ensure that: classroom spaces are conducive to student learning; materials/supplies are available and ready for use as needed.
  • Experience: At least three (3) years of relevant work experience; prior experience working in the Jewish community, experiential education, and/or camp are considered an asset.
