Job description
A Service Writer is responsible for scheduling customer's vehicles and gathering all pertinent information on the customer and their vehicle. Asking questions and recording the customer's concerns and maintenance requests for their vehicles, their budget and the time required. A service writer's job description requires detailed knowledge of car mechanics, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate well with Patrons.
Essential duties and Responsibilities :
Asks the customer to explain specific vehicle issues.
Takes detailed notes about symptoms based on customer testimony.
Schedules the appointment with the customer.
Greets the customer when they arrive.
Ensures the customer is aware of the time and costs of the diagnosis, inspection, maintenance and / or repair.
Confirms the "best" method of contact for the day.
Enters the customer information into the database.
Performs a digital inspection of the vehicle when it is dropped off.
Reviews previous recommendations and scheduled maintenance.
Draws up the work order and forwards it to the Service Advisor.
Answers questions posed by the customer.
Performs reminder and follow-up calls.
Assists the Service Advisor.
Maintains electronic and / or paper records of completed service work.
Explains the work completed by the technicians and makes suggestions for future maintenance.
Provides billing statements and explains billing details.
Processes payments
Inspects vehicle before returning it to the customer.
Trains new service writers.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Demonstrates detailed knowledge of the automotive industry.
Possesses working knowledge of the makeups, frequent problems, and necessary maintenance for a variety of vehicles.
Exhibits strong customer service skills.
Demonstrates solid organizational skills.
Possesses knowledge of proper safety precautions in the service area.
Knows how to drive manual and automatic transmission vehicles.
Demonstrates strong leadership skills.
Is able to read and interpret work orders and billing statements.
Demonstrates the ability to translate automotive jargon into layman's terms for the customer's benefit.
Pays close attention to detail.
Possesses basic computer skills.
Possesses physical strength and stamina to remain standing or moving for an entire shift.
Maintains calm and patient demeanor with frustrated or confused customers.
Works well with a team of mechanics.
Education and Experience :
Verifiable previous experience in the automotive service industry is required.
Must hold a valid driver's license.
Work Environment :
Most time will be spent at the front end of the service area assisting customers.
Conditions in the shop may be dangerous and dirty.
Proper protective gear must be worn when in the shop.
Standard 40 hour workweek applies.
