Job description

Requisition ID: 100063

Job Category: Engineering

Location: Sydney, NS, Canada

Join a company that is passionately committed to the pursuit of a better world through positive change. With more than 70 years of business and technical expertise in mining, energy, and infrastructure, our 10,000 colleagues in 150 countries tirelessly work toward bettering the industries in which we operate. With practical solutions that are safe, innovative and sustainable, we think globally while acting locally. Are you looking for an opportunity to join a diverse group of professionals who are committed to remaining exceptional? We look forward to hearing from you.

Our expertise in infrastructure includes aviation, highways and bridges, planning and advisory services, ports, rail and transit, tunnels, and water. Want to be part of the creation and construction of our cities? Then the infrastructure team is for you!

Design infrastructure that powers critical industries

At Hatch, we are passionately committed to the pursuit of a better world through positive change. Our teams work at the forefront of industrial infrastructure, developing innovative solutions across energy, metals, and transportation.

We’re looking for a Mechanical CAD Technician who thrives on precision, collaboration, and solving complex design challenges — and who wants to contribute to fuel handling and storage systems that are critical to industrial and aviation operations.

Why join Hatch

  • Work on technically complex, high-impact infrastructure projects
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Canada and globally
  • Be part of a culture that values innovation, ownership, and continuous improvement
  • Grow your career in an environment where learning and curiosity are encouraged

Your role

As part of the mechanical and infrastructure team, you will contribute to the design and delivery of fuel handling and storage systems, supporting both early-stage concepts and detailed engineering.

You will play a key role in translating engineering requirements into high-quality, buildable designs, while collaborating closely with engineers, designers, and field teams.

Your responsibilities

1. Design & Technical Delivery

  • Develop 2D and 3D designs for mechanical infrastructure systems, including piping, tanks, pumps, valves, and associated components
  • Contribute to the layout and detailed design of fuel handling and storage facilities
  • Support both preliminary and detailed engineering phases
  • Ensure designs meet project specifications, codes, and industry standards

2. Modeling & Drawing Production

  • Prepare and update general arrangement drawings, detailed drawings, and design sketches
  • Develop 3D piping models and coordinate with other disciplines
  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and quality of all deliverables in line with Hatch standards
  • Maintain organized and traceable drawing records

3. Field Integration & Validation

  • Participate in field reviews and site visits to validate existing conditions
  • Incorporate field data into designs to ensure constructability and accuracy
  • Collaborate with site teams to resolve design challenges

4. Project & Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with engineers and multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated designs
  • Support the preparation of engineering deliverables and contract documentation
  • Contribute to meeting project timelines and deliverable milestones
  • Participate in continuous improvement of design processes and tools

What you bring

  • Diploma or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering Technology / CAD / Drafting
  • 5+ years of experience in industrial or infrastructure design
  • Strong experience with Autodesk tools (Plant 3D, AutoCAD, etc.)
  • Experience in 3D piping modeling
  • Understanding of pumping systems, piping networks, and industrial layouts
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deliverables
  • Collaborative mindset with a proactive, solution-oriented approach

Nice to have

  • Experience in fuel handling and storage systems
  • Exposure to aviation or industrial terminal projects
  • Civil 3D or AutoTurn experience
  • Site or construction interface experience

Why join us?

What we offer you?

  • Flexible work environment
  • Long term career development
