Your Position & How You Will Contribute :

Based in York Region with a hybrid working environment, Reporting to the Director of Construction , the Construction Field Inspector will work closely with contractors, project managers, and internal teams to ensure that all field work meets quality, safety, and schedule expectations. This dynamic position provides an opportunity to grow within a fast-paced, innovative telecommunications environment.

Responsibilities & Key Duties include :

  • Field Inspections and Quality Assurance
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure FTTH and outside plant construction aligns with approved designs, permits, and quality standards.
  • Monitor the placement and routing of underground utilities , fiber optic infrastructure, and aerial pathways (including MDU installations).
  • Perform quality control checks on trenching, splicing, optical testing, and cable placement.
  • Identify, document, and resolve defects or deviations in the construction process promptly.

2. Health, Safety, and Compliance

  • Enforce strict compliance with Health & Safety regulations on all job sites, ensuring adherence to company safety policies and protocols.
  • Conduct site audits to monitor hazards and ensure proper use of equipment and safety measures.
  • Validate that contractors possess proper insurance, safety certifications, and onboarding documentation.
  • 3. Project Monitoring and Documentation

  • Oversee field work to ensure alignment with project schedules and progress milestones, including the management of daily worksheets, material demands, and documentation.
  • Review construction plans (Issued for Construction - IFC) and communicate project scope and specifications clearly to field teams.
  • Coordinate review and completion of "as-built" documentation with the Construction Manager and ensure timely distribution for project closeouts.
  • Track and validate contractor performance, working closely with the Senior Construction Manager and Project Managers to address discrepancies and meet forecasts.
  • 4 .Project Closeout and Turnover

  • Facilitate the closeout process with clients, obtaining final sign-offs and ensuring all deliverables are completed.
  • Collaborate with Operations to ensure the smooth and timely turnover of projects for sales and drop crews.
  • 5. Resource and Inventory Management

  • Monitor material usage on job sites, ensuring appropriate inventory levels and minimizing waste.
  • Support timely delivery of resources, equipment, and materials to maintain project momentum.
  • 6. Team Coordination and Problem Solving

  • Act as the primary liaison between contractors, project teams, and internal stakeholders to resolve field-related issues.
  • Manage difficult customer and contractor situations professionally, providing clear communication and practical solutions.
  • Education & Certifications :

  • College diploma or technical certification in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Telecommunications , or a related field.
  • Certifications (preferred) :
  • Safety Certifications : WHMIS, Working at Heights, First Aid / CPR.
  • Technical Certifications : Utility Locating, Confined Space Entry, Fiber Optic Association (FOA) certification.
  • Experience :

  • 5+ years of experience in FTTH telecom construction , including underground infrastructure, aerial pathways, and maintenance.
  • Proven experience with fiber optic placement, splicing, optical testing, and MDU installations .
  • Solid understanding of construction plans, designs, and specifications, with the ability to interpret and communicate project details.
  • Strong knowledge of operating and monitoring light and heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance.
  • Technical Skills :

  • Proficiency with tools and software :
  • Field Management Software , GIS tools, AutoCAD (an asset), and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with construction-related technologies, such as splicing tools and optical testing equipment.
  • Ability to perform quality assurance inspections, audits, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Attributes :

  • Attention to Detail : Ability to identify deviations and ensure adherence to construction plans. Strong Communication : Clear verbal and written communication skills for working with contractors, teams, and stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving : Proactive approach to identifying and resolving field challenges.
  • Leadership Skills : Professional and effective management of contractors and field teams.
  • Safety-Focused : Strong commitment to health, safety, and compliance on all job sites.
  • Physical Capability : Ability to work outdoors for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs , and work at heights over 4 meters using ladders and lifts.
  • Time Management : Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines effectively.
