Compensation : $29.50 / Hour
Employment Type : Part Time, Contract; 8+ hours / week.
(Must be available Monday- Thursday 3 : 15pm-5 : 45pm.)
About Us
Since 1986, Neighbour to Neighbour (N2N) Centre has been working to lead the Hamilton community to an improved quality of life. What started as a small food bank has evolved into an indispensable part of Hamiltons social fabric. N2N gets to the very root of its communitys needs, offering access to healthy food, skill building programs, tutoring for children, utility support programs, counselling and a host of other interventions.
N2N works with a small staff team of less than 30 people but is powered by a dedicated team of over 400 community volunteers to mobilize its mission. N2N are neighbours supporting neighbours. N2N thrives on a spirit of teamwork, collaboration, and community cohesiveness, tutoring for children, utility support programs, counselling and a host of other interventions.
Position Summary
The Math Success Program Facilitator is responsible for implementing whole-group activities designed to help participants build numeracy skills. You will lead your assigned math locations and create an environment for learning under the direction of the Education Programs Coordinator. Our programs are offered after school and involve whole group activities and small group homework / curriculum support with the support of volunteer tutors. You will be responsible for supporting, tracking and mentoring the volunteer tutors at your assigned math locations.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable with elementary math concepts and passionate about learning. They will be confident with their ability to reach out to participants and create a professional relationship built on mutual trust and respect. They know how to engage participants and volunteer tutors, to make learning a meaningful process. This position requires you to work at multiple different locations and carry materials from site to site.
Key Role Responsibilities
Facilitate the math success program!
- Comfortable enough with elementary level math concepts to deliver engaging educational programming to children in grades 5- 8.
- Confident in following a lesson plan to deliver an engaging program to children and youth.
- Ability to work independently and demonstrate strong facilitator skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to understand and use positive behaviour management techniques.
- Able to identify and address the individual needs of each participant to facilitate learning.
- Able to plan and prepare materials that reflect participant needs in collaboration with your co-facilitator and the Education Programs Coordinator.
- Able to assess and identify gaps in learning and adapt activities and lessons to meet individual participant needs.
- Committed to providing participants with a meaningful tutoring experience through engaging lessons, positive feedback and effective praise.
- Provide math tutoring and mentoring support to enrolled participants and volunteer tutors as needed; able to mentor youth volunteers.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and discretion with regards to sensitive or confidential matters.
- Comfortable contacting parents / guardians to report absences and to share progress and next steps as needed.
- Understand the importance of appropriate and professional relationships in the context of children / youth programing.
- Work in tandem with the Education Programs Coordinator to track and record participant data, volunteer hours, and surveys.
- Participate in the collection of data and information for the end-of-year Impact Report.
- Other duties as required.
