Job description

Make a Splash This Summer!

The Town of Blackfalds is recruiting enthusiastic, safety‑focused, and customer‑service–driven Seasonal Lifeguards and Swim Instructors to join our team at the Abbey Centre Outdoor Pool. If you enjoy working outdoors, value teamwork, and are passionate about aquatic safety and instruction, we want to hear from you!

As part of our Aquatics team, you will play a vital role in creating a positive, fun, and safe aquatic experience for all guests. Seasonal Lifeguards and Swim Instructors are responsible for:

Lifeguarding Duties

  • Monitoring and ensuring the safety of all patrons in and around the aquatic facility.
  • Providing first aid and responding to emergencies when required.
  • Enforcing and educating the public on aquatic policies and procedures.
  • Assisting with rotations, hazard removal, and safety evaluations.

Swim Instruction Duties

  • Delivering high‑quality instruction for the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life program.
  • Ensuring accurate participant evaluation and providing positive guest experiences.
  • Assisting fellow instructors and supporting lesson operations.

Administrative & Operational Support

  • Completing daily checklists, inspections, and documentation.
  • Communicating with Aquatic Shift Supervisors and aquatic leadership staff.
  • Supporting inventories, facility upkeep, and general pool operations.

Required Certifications

  • National Lifeguard – Pool Option
  • Lifesaving Swim Instructor certification
  • Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C and AED

Minimum Age Requirements

  • 16+ to work as a Lifeguard
  • 15+ to work as a Swim Instructor

Additional Requirements

  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (16+)
  • Child Intervention Record Check (18+)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong communication, teamwork, and customer‑service skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic outdoor environment with varying weather conditions.
  • Problem‑solving skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to safety.
  • Ability to mentor volunteers and collaborate with a large staff team.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Physically fit to perform rescues and remain in a wet environment for long periods.
