About the Role

The Specialist, Labour and Employee Relations provides compliance and risk-based labour relations and employment law guidance and advice to the line organization and other members of Human Resources on day-to-day administration and interpretation of the CUPE Local 3338, TSSU and the Poly Party collective agreements and University policies relating to APSA and excluded employees. The role works closely with Labour Relations Advisors to support first-level negotiations or step-1 grievances, conducting investigations, developing reports and providing advice and responds to requests for advice or interpretations. The role supports bargaining processes by drafting bargaining proposals, overseeing the exchange of documents with the union and tracking the University's positions, and by managing the Public Sector Employer Council (PSEC) costing spreadsheets. The Specialist plays a key role in process improvement and special projects within the Labour Relations unit and provides guidance and direction to the Labour Relations Assistant as required.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or Human Resources Management, or other relevant discipline and three years of related experience in labour relations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Excellent knowledge of labour and employment legislation and government policies (Employment Standards, Labour Relations Code, Employment Equity and Human Rights).
  • Excellent knowledge of software applications including Human Resources Information Systems (e.g., PeopleSoft).
  • Knowledge of other areas of Human Resource Management including Staffing, Training, Compensation, Benefits and Pensions.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and presentation).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including well developed conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong ability to interpret and apply collective agreements and associated policies and procedures.
  • Strong aptitude for mathematics and statistics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member.

    The assignment end date is January 16, 2027.

    The pay range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for the position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the pay range.
