Intermediate / Senior Ecologist

Please note, we are looking for an experienced Ecologist with a minimum of 8 years’ experience planning, conducting and / or managing ecological studies (e.g., wildlife, vegetation, wetlands, fish and fish habitat studies).

Our highly respected and successful Environmental Permitting and Management team has an ever-growing portfolio of work, built on technical excellence and exceptional service to our clients, with a particular need for support on our infrastructure, power, and renewables projects.

We are looking for experienced Ecologists in Ontario with at least 8 years’ experience to lead ecological assessment, monitoring, reporting and field-based surveys across a wide variety of energy and infrastructure projects.

The ideal candidate must have strong work experience in the ecological sciences, with a specialization in wildlife biology, vegetation, aquatic biology or wetland ecosystems. You will be motivated and detail-oriented, with demonstrable experience in Canada. This mid-level career role is for office locations in Ontario; however, we will consider other locations nationally. You will be working as part of the national Biology technical group, alongside other Provincial and National expertise.

Your day-to-day work will include field surveys using accepted field protocols including species at risk, habitat assessment and / or construction environmental monitoring, including identifying environmental risks, preparing of monitoring reports and data reporting against accepted standards.

Our work includes delivering keystone projects throughout their lifecycle : from early assessment of baseline conditions and constraints to strategic development of regulatory approvals processes, to compliance management through construction and operations, as well as developing habitat mitigation and offsetting. Our team works collaboratively within projects to gain social acceptance and manage our clients' commitments to the environment and sustainable development.

Your role within the team :

  • Plan, coordinate and conduct biological surveys in accordance with applicable protocols / methods.
  • Act as a key resource for diverse set of environmental assessment and permitting projects.
  • Act as a lead for field work and mentor junior field staff.
  • Prepare environmental monitoring and mitigation plans.
  • Ensure technical quality of work including field methods.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical data reports, which could include desktop research, regulatory and approvals and permitting applications.
  • Prepares environmental documents, e.g., environmental inspection, environmental monitoring, environmental screening or similar.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with regulatory agencies.
  • Field-based environmental monitoring for project compliance during construction phase relevant to environmental management requirements which could include : Acting as the main point of contact between field activity and Project Manager during project execution.Providing field-level guidance on practical environmental protection to prevent or minimize project impacts on environmental receptors.Maintaining an independent role from other project parties to assess compliance and report noncompliance events.Assisting the project management team in resolving environmental issues / non-compliance issues on projects as they arise.Environmental sampling when required (e.g., water and soil).

  • Post-secondary education (Relevant University degree, diploma or graduation from a technical program).
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience planning, conducting and / or managing ecologoical studies (e.g., wildlife, vegetation, wetlands, fish and fish habitat studies).
  • Experience on construction sites in an environmental capacity.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Ontario terrestrial and / or aquatic habitats.
  • Working knowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislation and regulatory process.
  • Working knowledge of the current survey protocols in ON.
  • Proficiency in data collection, data management and statistical analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to write data reports.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement practical mitigation and management plans.
  • Positive attitude and flexibility to work independently or in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Detail-oriented, meticulous with field notes and methodologies.
  • Please note that some work for this position may be in remote locations for extended periods of time and may require overtime, weekends and variable hours.
