Job Description:

Provides Direct Instructional Assistance:

  • Manages the day-to-day operation of department language labs such as checking the operation of the computers, language lab software and hardware, video projector and other equipment. Troubleshoots and repairs lab system and computer problems; requisitions maintenance and repair; orders and maintains supplies and equipment for the labs.
  • Researches and liaises with IT to recommend adoption of and upgrades to lab hardware and software, as needed.
  • Liaises with Facilities and IT to research, design, and upgrade facilities for language labs, as needed.
  • Develops requests for proposal and leads research, testing, and implementation of language learning technology and facilities; liaises with suppliers to initiate purchase and to maintain and troubleshoot hardware and software.
  • Assists faculty and students in the operation of lab equipment and software by providing orientation and demonstrations to faculty and students.
  • Instructs external users in the operation of lab.
  • Demonstrates to students how to access and navigate the college network, course management system, shared files, publishers’ sites and other online resources for language courses.
  • Assists students in all computer lab related activities, such as practice sessions and aural/oral tests.
  • Assists instructors in running lab sessions, including speaking and listening exams, paired discussions, and individual recordings.
  • Demonstrates how to set up and use multilingual input method editors.
  • Monitors students during lab practice sessions; provides support to students completing instructor’s and publisher’s written exercises and recordings; working with the instructor, responds to questions about exercises, assignments and content. Provides additional help to students as needed and as classroom logistics dictate.
  • Works with the Assistant Department Chair to manage language lab schedule, assists faculty with submitting lab schedule requests.
  • Monitors student use in the drop-in language laboratory, ensuring appropriate use and security of facility; provides technical support and instructional assistance to students in drop-in lab.
  • Supervises tests and quizzes in classrooms, as needed.
  • Schedules and invigilates alternate examinations, according to departmental policy.

Provides instructional support:

  • Formats and proofreads online and printed course material, maintains and edits digital media resources.
  • Assists faculty with setting up and maintaining course management systems; adds text and audiovisual content and web links; develops grade book (formulas, schemes, rubrics, etc.); sets up discussion modules and other features.
  • Creates and maintains centralized electronic filing systems for shared course material and department operations; establishes and organizes student-access file network; maintains department libraries.
  • Assists faculty with course management systems; adding text and audiovisual content and web links; developing grade book (formulas, schemes, rubrics, etc.); setting up discussion modules and other features.
  • Assesses technological needs of language programs; helps language faculty apply technological solutions to the second language learning process; promotes and implements initiatives to integrate instructional technologies.
  • Researches new technology for in-class instruction in consultation with IT and makes recommendations to the Department; orders software upgrades as needed.
  • Evaluates emerging language instruction technologies; researches and evaluates applications and equipment for acquisition; implements new learning technologies and trains instructors and students in their use.
  • Liaises with the IT and Educational Technology departments and with language technologists at other institutions; maintains currency in language learning technology and pedagogy; attends related education and training sessions.
  • Provides information on available learning resources to students; develops and maintains departmental Instructional Web to share instructions, resources and information.
  • Sponsors student language clubs, assists students in developing language learning games and activities, liaises with Student Life.
  • Maintains and develops department website, social media, and other online resources; writes news stories and produces content for the website and social media.
  • Responds to queries from public in person or by telephone or e-mail, or refers them to the proper discipline for reply; manages department and language group e-mail accounts.
  • Maintains tracking system of markers.
  • Conducts research of technologies, software, equipment, and supplies; prepares purchase requisitions; maintains inventory.
  • In consultation with the Department Chair, tracks and monitors operating and capital budgets. Works with Department Chair to submit budget enhancement and capital requests.
  • Recruits, selects, trains, and oversees student assistants; approves timesheets.
  • Tabulates course enrolment, grade distribution and other statistics; presents data for Department use in course planning and curriculum development.
  • Plans and participates in departmental meetings and activities; in collaboration with the Chair and Assistant Chair, prepares agenda and completes minutes; presents reports on language labs, budget, enrolment and grades data and other topics.

May perform other related duties as required.

D. Qualifications Required:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Humanities field with 1–2 years of post-secondary training in or knowledge of at least one of French, Spanish, Mandarin, or Japanese. Preference will be given to candidates with training or knowledge of two or more of these languages, specifically in French and another language.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in office administrative duties and providing instructional support to students.
  • Experience with language lab software is preferred.
  • Experience working with audiovisual equipment, multimedia software, and web management systems.
  • Intermediate knowledge in the use of computer applications including word processing (i.e., MS Word), spreadsheets (i.e., Excel), Teams, and in course management systems and educational technology.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to explain and demonstrate the use of the language lab and educational resources, lab techniques, procedures and methodologies to instructors and students and respond to related enquiries.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; ability to identify and correct typographical and grammatical errors.
  • Willingness to develop intermediate to advanced competency in two languages.
  • Familiarity with a variety of applications used in support of instructions, such as learning management systems, blogs, web editors, image editing software, media creation and conversion tools.
  • Effective organization skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to administer both aural and written tests and quizzes.
  • Ability to advise and direct student workers as required.
  • Ability to operate audiovisual equipment and perform routine maintenance on a variety of laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise a high level of initiative and responsibility.
  • Ability to research and learn the use of new technology for lab instruction in collaboration with IT and to demonstrate and assist students and instructors in the use of new technologies.
  • Strong accounting and budgeting skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, instructors, staff and students. The ability to meet work performance standards set by the College.
