The Manager, Career Education & Professional Development, will lead the career education team – undergraduate and graduate – to deliver career programming in fulfillment of the strategic direction of Science Careers & Experience Centre.
Reporting to the director, Science Careers & Experience Centre, the manager’s role will lead, coach, and supervise a team of career education professionals to ensure McMaster science students receive best in class, innovative, impactful, student-centered career programming that empowers them to create authentic and meaningful lives and careers.
This position is also responsible for staying up to date with the latest advances in the field of career education, including technology, particularly Gen AI related including research, evaluate, cost, and make recommendations related to the purchase and use of technology to support the team in maximizing efficiencies.
This position will be vital in contributing to and implementing an intentional operational strategy that ensures we are meeting and reporting on key performance indicators in pursuit of our service excellence goals.
In addition, the Manager will be responsible for researching market trends, best practices in service delivery, and program assessment to inform program specifically as it relates to science students.

Accountabilities :
Strategic Planning / Leadership :
- Under the leadership of the Director, develops and implements an annual operational plan for career education that includes strategic initiatives, new program / events, metrics, benchmarking, and resourcing identification.
- Provides leadership to the career team to ensure programming quality standards are maintained, programming is designed and implemented in line with university policy, Science Careers & Experience and Faculty of Science strategic plans. Problem solves with team as issues arise.
- Develops a service delivery approach that maximizes resources and increases services / supports during peak and critical times. Considers online, in-person and hybrid service delivery and collaborations with employers, community partners and alumni, and student-to-student support models.
- Collaborates with the Events & Communications Specialist to develop student communication plans that seek to engage more students with career education, starting earlier and with more frequent developmental touchpoints during their education.
- Develops career education initiatives to ensure consistency and scaffolding in career education programming across the Faculty.
- Respond to the dynamic and changing needs of the new workplace, employer expectations and market conditions. Leads research and scans current sector trends to ensure programming adapts to the ever-changing environment and consistently ensures our students are prepared to excel in their chosen fields. Including the use of technology, in particular Gen AI, in the field of career education.
- Demonstrate the faculty’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity by ensuring that the specific needs of all groups of students are considered and supported.
- Provide leadership for the Science Peer Help Initiative (SciPHI) program to ensure the program expands and develops but retains its value to recipients and student volunteers and leaders.
- Participates as a departmental representative on various McMaster committees and external professional associations as agreed.
- Responsible for ensuring the strategic goals and annual objectives of the Career Team are met and reported on.
