Job description
Controller (Plant Controller)

North Bay, Ontario

Build More Than Financial Statements. Help Build the Business.

For over 40 years, G&P Welding & Ironworks Ltd. has been designing and fabricating structural steel products that become part of bridges, commercial buildings, industrial facilities and infrastructure throughout Ontario.

With approximately 50 employees, we are a well-established and financially stable custom steel fabrication company entering an exciting new chapter.

After the retirement of our long-tenured Controller, we are searching for the right person to become a key member of our leadership team.

This isn't a corporate accounting role.

This is a true Plant Controller position where you'll see projects move from blueprint to finished product while providing the financial leadership that helps the business succeed.

If you enjoy manufacturing, project accounting, job costing and working directly with owners who value financial insight, we'd like to meet you.

Why This Opportunity?

You'll work directly with our two owners who remain actively involved in estimating and operations, giving you a genuine seat at the management table.

You'll also benefit from an experienced Controller who has returned on an interim basis and is committed to mentoring the successful candidate during the transition.

This is an excellent opportunity for either:

  • An experienced CPA looking for a long-term leadership role; or

  • An ambitious accounting professional with strong manufacturing or construction finance experience who is ready to take the next step with mentorship and support.

What You'll Be Responsible For

As our Controller, you'll lead the financial operations of the business including:

  • Full cycle accounting and monthly financial reporting

  • Financial statement preparation and analysis

  • Budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management

  • Job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting and profitability analysis

  • Supporting estimating and project financial performance

  • Managing Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and General Ledger functions

  • Administering bi-weekly management payroll while supporting payroll processes

  • Developing and maintaining financial controls

  • Supporting annual external financial reviews

  • Assisting with ERP administration and process improvement

  • Managing and implementing new processes

  • Interacting with all employees

  • Providing financial advice that supports business growth and operational decision-making

What Will Make You Successful

You'll thrive in this role if you enjoy:

✔ Manufacturing and project-based accounting

✔ Understanding how jobs are built—not just how they're billed

✔ Reading project information and understanding the financial impact of production decisions

✔ Working closely with operations and ownership

✔ Improving systems and processes

✔ Being hands-on while thinking strategically

Qualifications

We're interested in people who bring a combination of experience, business judgment and leadership.

Ideally you will have:

  • CPA designation (preferred)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline

  • Experience in manufacturing, fabrication, construction or project-based industries

  • Strong understanding of:

    • Job Costing

    • Work-in-Progress (WIP)

    • Revenue Recognition

    • Financial Reporting

    • Internal Controls

  • Experience with ERP systems (Global Shop Solutions is considered an asset)

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills

  • Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills

Candidates with significant practical experience and strong manufacturing financial backgrounds are encouraged to apply, even if they do not hold a CPA designation.

What We Offer

Salary: $100,000 - $120,000, based on experience and qualifications

In addition, we offer:

  • Comprehensive Group Benefits after three months

  • Employer Pension Plan

    • Employee contributes 2%

    • Company contributes up to 4%

  • Two weeks' vacation (additional vacation may be negotiated based on experience)

  • Mentorship and transition support from our outgoing Controller

  • Stable long-term career opportunity

  • Collaborative leadership team

  • Opportunity to directly influence the success of the business
