Smartrend Manufacturing Group (SMG) Inc. is one of Manitoba's fastest-growing companies, committed to increasing safety in the school bus industry and reducing emissions in the electric vehicle charging sector through our diverse divisions. We design and develop exciting, patented, and innovative technologies that make a real and lasting impact across multiple industries.

At the heart of our success are the values that guide everything we do:

  • People – our team is what makes us special
  • Passion – from our hearts and minds, demonstrated through our actions
  • Priority – we put the customer first, every day, in everything we do
  • Partnership – with each other, our customers, and our suppliers

We provide a supportive environment where hard work, passions, and goals are recognized. Innovation and collaboration are at the heart of what we do. Share your drive and aspirations with us, and we'll ensure that your efforts open doors to new opportunities and growth.

THE POSITION

The Trade Compliance Specialist ensures that SMG's import and export activities fully comply with Canadian, U.S., and international trade regulations. This role requires deep expertise in product classification, documentation, and customs procedures. The Specialist partners with internal teams, brokers, and regulatory authorities to prevent compliance risks, avoid costly delays, and identify duty savings opportunities. By providing timely guidance and maintaining accurate records, the Specialist plays a critical role in supporting SMG's operational efficiency and growth.

HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING AN IMPACT

  • Prepare, review, and manage import/export documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Classify products using Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes and audit current classifications to ensure accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and international customs and trade regulations.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and provide proactive guidance on their impact to internal teams.
  • Support Finance in determining appropriate duties and recovering costs where applicable.
  • Review brokerage invoices for accuracy and resolve disputes.
  • Maintain detailed compliance records to support audits and regulatory reviews.
  • Build strong working relationships with customs brokers and regulatory authorities.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

  • Zero compliance violations and successful regulatory audits.
  • On-time, disruption-free imports and exports with minimal shipment delays.
  • Cost savings achieved through accurate classification and duty recovery.
  • Proactive risk management and clear communication on regulatory changes.
  • Recognized as a trusted subject matter expert for customs and trade compliance.

WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE YOU REQUIRE

  • 5+ years of experience with customs regulations and import/export procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of international trade agreements, tariffs, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with HTS product classification.
  • CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) certification or actively working toward certification.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment is an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

THE BENEFITS OF BEING PART OF OUR TEAM

We believe that a healthy, supported team is key to our success. That's why we offer a benefits package that prioritizes work-life balance, financial wellness, and overall well-being.

Our team members enjoy:

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Group insurance plan with health spending account
  • Paid Vacation
  • Company-paid shutdown from Christmas to New Years
  • Matching RRSP program

We would like to thank all applicants who apply, however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
