Summary of responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Inpatient Mental Health Services, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) works collaboratively with health care professionals from across the hospital, CCH’s Community Addiction and Mental Health Services (CAMHS), and other community services, including primary care providers, to assist in the provision of care for patients who are admitted to the Inpatient Mental Health Unit (IMHU), enrolled in the transitional day program, and support the psychiatric assessment of patients on other inpatient units. The NP coordinates patient care by working collaboratively with our interdisciplinary teams to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate clinical interventions units as well as embody a culture of caregiver inclusion in the patient’s plan of care.
The incumbent will demonstrate autonomy while assuming accountability and the authority to independently communicate a diagnosis, prescribe drugs and order a range of diagnostic tests as per approved hospital directives and the College of Nurses. The NP will provide care which includes assessments, diagnosis, counselling, screening, referral, education, treatment and follow-up. They will act as a liaison and consultant to other health care providers and regional partners regarding patient care and health services. Provide leadership in the transfer of knowledge into practice in nursing and related fields appropriate to the clinical focus
Requirements of the job
- Current Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario in the Extended Class
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a recognized University
- A minimum of three years of experience in working with clients who are experiencing addiction / mental health issues
- Experience with working with interprofessional health care teams
- Demonstrated ability to manage numerous and diverse activities, organizing and prioritizing appropriately to meet demands and expectations
- Strong advocate for patient- and caregiver- centred care
- Ability to apply critical thinking to patient care
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legal and ethical issues
- Advanced knowledge of the consultation process as they relate to individuals, groups and / or systems
- Excellent writing skills
- Knowledge of the regional health care system in the area of the discipline / specialty
- Demonstrated regular, punctual attendance
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
- Computer literacy (MS Office, Excel, Outlook)
- Functional level in English (oral and written)
