Specialty: Experimental quantum physics - Superconducting Qubit Experiment
DESCRIPTION:
The Faculty of Arts & Science is the heart of Canada’s leading university and one of the most comprehensive and diverse academic divisions in the world. The strength of Arts & Science derives from our combined teaching and research excellence in the humanities, sciences and social sciences across 29 departments, seven colleges and 46 interdisciplinary centers, institutes and programs. We can only realize our mission with the dedication and excellence of engaged staff and faculty. The diversity of opportunities and perspectives within the faculty reflect the local and global landscape and the need for curiosity, innovative thinking and collaboration. At Arts & Science, we take pride in our legacy of innovation and discovery that has changed the way we think about the world.
ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY
The Department of Physics is part of a dynamic academic community offering programs and courses to undergraduate and graduate students. We provide a comprehensive set of fundamental tools that can be brought to bear on many problems across a variety of fields. With world-class laboratories and outstanding faculty, the department fosters an in-depth understanding of an extremely diverse array of systems. Situated in the heart of downtown Toronto, our department is affiliated with various departments, institutes and research organizations, providing a broad network for our staff and students.
The Department of Physics at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a 2-year appointment with a possibility of renewal.
Research Associates Limited Term are intrinsically involved in research projects and independently carried out research activities and responsibilities, under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
The anticipated start date is September 1, 2026. This is a two-year limited term position with possibility of renewal.
Our research group works on superconducting circuit devices for quantum information processing, with emphasis on advancing superconducting qubit performance at both the physical and error-corrected logical levels for quantum computation.
The Research Associate is expected to independently carry out experimental research on superconducting qubits. This role involves developing advanced superconducting circuits and advanced quantum control techniques to suppress decoherence and enhance logical gate performance, with a near-term focus on implementing quantum error correction schemes incorporating qubits dominated by erasure errors. The candidate will also be responsible for the general testing and characterization of superconducting devices in the group, as well as the operation and management of dilution refrigerators. In addition, the Research Associate will closely interface with theoretical collaborators to implement novel concepts and protocols.
Applicants should apply online at the link below and include a cover letter, curriculum vitae and three reference names with their contact addresses and phone numbers. Any questions regarding this position should be directed to Ms. Joane Magnaye, Senior Secretary, Quantum Optics, Condensed Matter and Biophysics Group at joan.magnaye@utoronto.ca. All materials should be received by the closing date for full consideration.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education - PhD in Physics, with a specialty in Quantum Information and Quantum Control.
Experience
- A minimum of 4 years of experience in superconducting qubit experiments, including quantum chip design, cryogenic microwave setups, and control hardware-software stacks.
- Candidates with a background in high-fidelity multi-qubit experiments and noise channel analysis are preferred.
- Experience in carrying out research with a high degree of independence
- Experience in delivering presentations and proven track records of publications
- Experience in laboratory operations and train others (graduate students for example) in overall lab organizations to ensure health and safety, efficient and productive research environment
Additional Skills
- Project management, including monitoring project budgets, managing lab equipment, purchasing consumables, and ensuring safety compliance
- Leadership and ability to direct and supervise graduate students and postdoc fellows
- Interpersonal skills to facilitate effective collaboration within the research group and with external collaborators to advance research objectives.
