Overview
The Clinical Thrombosis Program at Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University invites applications for the Dr Jack Hirsh Research Fellowship , based at the David Braley Cardiac Vascular and Stroke Research Institute, starting in the second quarter of 2026. The Group is internationally recognized for its contributions to thrombosis mechanisms (including immunothrombosis), antithrombotic therapy, and clinical trials, and offers an outstanding training environment in both clinical and laboratory research.
Responsibilities
This bench-to-bedside thrombosis research fellowship will be jointly supervised by Drs Patricia Liaw (Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute, TaARI), Noel Chan (Population Health Research Institute, PHRI), and Jack Hirsh. The joint program focuses on mechanisms of immunothrombosis, including the role of extracellular histones, in the acute and chronic complications of venous and arterial thrombosis. The fellow will engage in translational laboratory studies and clinical thrombosis research, with responsibilities that include critical review of data; development of study protocols and ethics submissions; conduct and coordination of studies; and contribution to analyses, abstracts, and manuscripts. The fellow will participate actively in group meetings, journal clubs, and educational activities.
Qualifications
The position is particularly suitable for physicians (MD or equivalent) with training in internal medicine, hematology, cardiology, or related disciplines; applicants with a strong PhD or equivalent background in thrombosis, vascular biology, or related fields will also be considered . This is a one-year position with the option to renew for a further year, conditional on successful completion of the first year. The stipend is $70,000 CAD per year (plus benefits).
Application
Interested applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a brief statement of research interests, and contact details for referees to Dr Patricia Liaw (patricia.liaw@taari.ca), Dr Noel Chan (noel.chan@phri.ca) and Dr Jack Hirsh (hirshj@mcmaster.ca). Please submit applications by January 31, 2026.
