About the Position

Reporting to the CFO, the Controller oversees all aspects of the Company’s financial operations; this includes financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and planning along with accounting and internal controls. They work closely with members of the senior management team to manage the daily operations of the finance department to ensure financial success.

Duties and Responsibilities

Corporate Finance & Treasury :

  • Develop and support the CFO in broad financial policies and long-range plans to support overall growth and objectives and philosophy of the company.
  • Assist the CFO to develop creative and effective financing strategies to support capital requirements for potential future operational development.
  • Ensure the preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets that reflect the objectives, plans and priorities established in the strategic plan.
  • Oversee daily cash management, ensuring sufficient liquidity to meet operational and construction related needs.
  • Monthly cash flow projections to ensure that division has adequate cashflow to meet its obligations while taking advantage of opportunities.
  • Monitor credit facilities and ensure reporting requirements are adhered to.
  • Maintain treasury management processes that optimize cash management procedures, including future cashflow projections.
  • Initiate payment process, including payment function – cheques, EFT, and approvals, where appropriate.
  • Compliance, Development & Governance :

  • Identify key strategic issues as they arise and communicates those to executive.
  • Oversee regulatory reporting and compliance with (GST, Corporate income tax).
  • Ensure the Company has appropriate insurance coverage overall insurance adequately reduces risk of Company’s operations and safeguards assets.
  • Work with the CFO to develop short and long-term objectives for the Accounting and Finance function as well as the overall financial plan for the Company by working with operational management and other key stakeholders.
  • Review new partnership agreements, including preparation of partnership reports and analysis.
  • Assist the CFO and external advisers to develop and implements funding and tax planning strategies.
  • Assist the CFO with development of good corporate governance practices.
  • Financial Reporting :

  • Manage the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of the business units.
  • Prepare, provide and present consolidated annual, quarterly and monthly financial reporting packages (income statement) to senior management and the Board of Directors.
  • Calculate variances from budget and provide financial analysis as needed.
  • Review of bank and other general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Lead the preparation and management of annual budgets and rolling forecasts.
  • Provide financial projections based on construction timelines, costs and revenue expectations.
  • Assist the senior management team with effective fiscal management of the company’s assets.
  • Manage year end financial reports with external auditors and provide requested documentation in a timely manner.
  • Be the lead in new ERP initiatives and reporting including PowerBI.
  • Accounting System, Policies, Procedures, Internal Controls and Audit :

  • Assess the effectiveness of existing systems, processes and internal controls within accounting / finance function and provides recommendations for improvements to senior management.
  • Assist with the implementation of new ERP system that supports business needs and ensure team is following efficient processes.
  • Ensure a transparent flow of timely and accurate information to the senior management team to allow for proactive decision making.
  • Develop and monitor consistent application of accounting policies, and the establishment and maintenance of appropriate internal checks and controls to ensure the accuracy of information and the existence of appropriate safeguards to protect the company’s assets
  • Qualifications

  • Professional Accounting Designation (CA, CMA, CGA) required.
  • Five (5) or more years of progressive responsibility and career stability in a Controller position, with proven and demonstrated leadership abilities in the residential construction industry required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (superior Excel skills)
  • Construction industry experience would be an asset
  • Deep understanding of accounting principles
  • Knowledge of Dynamics365
  • Excellent understanding of Canadian tax laws and regulatory requirements including GST, payroll taxes and construction specific tax issues.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collaborate with senior management.
  • CaseWare knowledge considered an asset.
  • Understanding of local, provincial, and federal workplace compliance regulations, ordinances, and legislation requirements preferred.
