Overview
As a member of the military, Biomedical Electronics Technologists provide technical maintenance and repair support for medical and dental equipment used in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). They use electronic instrumentation and workshop tools to ensure the accurate performance of medical devices.
The primary responsibility is to maintain medical equipment according to Canadian Standards Association and manufacturer specifications, including operating room monitors, ICU monitors, emergency room devices, laboratory equipment, and diagnostic imaging devices.
Work environment
They may work in regional repair facilities, at Canadian Field Hospitals, or Advanced Surgical Centres, both within Canada and internationally. They might also work on ships, performing repairs and maintenance, with regular visits to medical establishments within the CAF.
Entry plans
Options include Direct Entry and Paid Education. The minimum education is a Diploma of Technology in Biomedical Engineering from an accredited Canadian institution, plus six months of recent work experience, or no experience if recently graduated. The CAF may place candidates directly into on-the-job training after basic training.
Training
Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School. Following this, trainees complete one year of on-job training. Opportunities exist for further specialization through courses in Technical Administration, Leadership, and Service Tech courses.
Part-time options
Reserve members undergo the same training as full-time personnel, starting with basic military training and then up to one year of supervised on-the-job training. They may serve part-time at clinics or full-time at units, with pay and benefits comparable to full-time members.
