Position Profile :

The Department of Paediatrics, Children’s Hospital, London Health Science Centre, and Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University is seeking a Pediatric Clinician Scientist as the GSK Chair in Clinical Pharmacology. The primary role of the Chair will be to lead a research program directed at developing and evaluating optimal disease treatments. There are many uncertainties in identifying suitable molecular targets for therapies, and how novel compounds should best be assessed from the perspective of efficacy and safety. The research focus of the GSK Chair in Clinical Pharmacology will be on the development and validation of optimal methodologies to assess novel medicines. These technologies, which are expected to include a variety of basic research, clinical and pharmacoepidemiologic approaches, will be used to evaluate therapeutic agents, and to determine how best to use them within the context of specific diseases.

Academic and Clinical Expectations : The successful candidate will have a keen interest and expertise in pharmacology and translational research, the ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of members of the research and health care team and office staff, and will be expected to lead in team-based research. The successful candidate will be expected to secure and hold external research funding, to contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to supervise graduate trainees. Advanced training and experience in research is preferred. Clinical duties and expectations will be determined by the Department of Paediatrics.

Qualifications : The ideal candidate will have an MD or equivalent degree and and must be eligible for licensing in the Province of Ontario. Subspecialty certification in a Paediatric discipline from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent is required. Expertise / experience in Precision Medicine is essential. The successful candidate will hold a full-time limited term Clinical Academic appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, or a Continuing Clinical Academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, depending upon qualifications and experience at the time of appointment.

Compensation Details : The Chair appointment is for a five-year period, with the possibility of renewal for one additional term pending review recommendation. Compensation will commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be composed primarily of an alternate funding plan and academic salary.

The Department : The Department of Paediatrics provides comprehensive acute care, ambulatory and in-patient services for children to a population of 2 million in southwestern Ontario. Children with a full range of care issues are managed in our Paediatric Emergency Department, Paediatric Critical Care Unit, Neonatology Unit and in-patient Clinical Teaching Units. The Department has a strong research environment and is partnered with the Children’s Health Research Institute () with broad programs studying health and disease in children ranging in age from pre-term neonates to adolescents. The Department plays an essential role in Western’s undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education. The Department has a Royal College accredited program in Paediatric Clinical Pharmacology. The University of Western Ontario has the largest Division of Clinical Pharmacology in North America as well as the largest Clinical Pharmacology residency in Canada and an active graduate program in Pharmacology and Physiology.

The Hospital : Children's Hospital is the only Canadian tertiary care center between Toronto and Winnipeg, serving a population of approximately 500,000 children. Paediatric Critical Care is a 12-bed tertiary care unit with an annual admission of over 900 patients. In addition, Children's Hospital has 64 general paediatric beds, 46 neonatal beds and a dynamic emergency department. The Department of Paediatrics in London has over 100 faculty members, 40 trainees, and provides a full array of Paediatric sub-specialty services. The Children’s Hospital has a Quality and Safety Committee and has formed partnerships within various international quality improvement initiatives. The department has 5 basic scientists as core members and numerous opportunities exist for clinical, epidemiological, translational, and basic science research.

The City : London, Ontario is Canada’s 10th largest city with a population over 400,000, a catchment area of 2.4 million, and is situated in southwestern Ontario between Toronto and Detroit. The region has a strong economy and excellent primary and secondary school systems for residents with children. It is a safe and culturally diverse city.
