Job Duties Job Duties The Sustainability-Led Integrated Centres of Excellence () is a solution-oriented applied research centre at Saskatchewan Polytechnic — advancing sustainable resource management with a full life-cycle lens on economic activities in Saskatchewan’s energy and resources, manufacturing, agriculture and forestry sectors. By working with SLICE, industry and community partners can capture new opportunities, solve everyday problems and realize economic, social and environmental benefits. SLICE’s collaborative approach brings together the expertise needed to address complex issues related to sustainability.Based at the Regina campus of Saskatchewan Polytechnic as part of the Biomaterials Testing and Prototyping (B-TAP) group, the Research Associate will work collaboratively with industry and community partners to develop innovative bio-composites and prototypes to advance sustainable manufacturing. The B-TAP lab focuses on a circular economy approach to utilizing waste from a variety of industries (e.g. agriculture, forestry) to create new products. B-TAP features state-of-the-art facilities with injection moulding, extrusion moulding, fibre processing, and materials testing and has access to a talented student pool in the Innovative Manufacturing Program at Sask Polytech.Reporting to the Research Chair in Biomaterials, the Research Associate will be involved in multiple applied research projects where they will be a key contributor in a project management and / or technical role. The Research Associate will work closely with colleagues to scope projects, write grant proposals, undertake material development and testing, support prototype production using advanced infrastructure and equipment, and communicate research results. The Research Associate will have responsibility for ensuring equipment in the B-TAP lab is maintained and calibrated and will support research activities with equipment operation.SLICE values diversity and welcomes applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE Specific Accountabilities
- In conjunction with the Research Chair and other team members, contribute to development of research objectives, scope projects, and write project / grant proposals in an applied and partner-driven framework.
- Work within project timelines to ensure project progress.
- Provide training, supervision and mentorship to student research assistants and technologists.
- Collaborate with research team members to choose research methods and experimental approaches.
- Under minimal guidance, execute technical experiments following appropriate laboratory procedures.
- Maintain, operate and calibrate equipment in the B-TAP Lab facilities of the Innovative Manufacturing Centre (IMC) of Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
- Operate equipment such as extruder, injection moulding, rotational moulding, compression and thermoforming and fiber processing equipment as needed for applied research projects.
- Conduct laboratory and field tests based on ASTM standards such as melt flow rate, tensile strength, impact strength, morphology, moisture content, and others as needed for applied research projects.
- Lead standard verification and quality analysis of products generated from research projects (e.g. biodegradability, compostability etc.).
- Identify and troubleshoot processing problems.
- Assess, interpret, and evaluate outcomes of research.
- Actively participate in meetings with partner organizations and industrial clients, and function as a primary point of contact when delegated.
- Contribute to preparation of reports of completed projects for partners; publication in technical journals, community presentations, or other knowledge mobilization activities.
- Collaborate with internal and external contacts such as educational, funding, and research bodies.
- Develop SOPs and implement safety protocols related to the area of research.
- Contribute to creating a positive, diverse, and inclusive work and learning environment.
