Job description

The Environmental Services Division of the Engineering and Regional Utilities Department provides environmental leadership and develops integrated sustainability strategies and policies that guide the growth of the City in accordance with Council’s Strategic Plan and the City’s updated Official Community Plan.

We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Solid Waste and Environmental Coordinator to lead the solid waste, recycling and composting diversion programs in the City. This position is full-time. Under the supervision of the Director, Environmental Services, the Coordinator supports the City in meeting solid waste and environmental targets outlined in applicable plans; provides environmental monitoring and assessment expertise; follows and applies the City’s Solid Waste Management Bylaw and supervises a team of three motivated staff who help educate residents on waste sorting, bylaw implications and other environmental topics.

The Coordinator manages environmental compliance projects and utilizes sound communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate project outcomes / recommendations to Committees and Council. The job requires experience implementing public education and consultation events to promote awareness and participation in City programs. Understanding municipal processes and bylaws, ability to perform in fast-paced environments, create effective work plans and balance shifting priorities would be an asset.

The ideal candidate will possess :

  • A degree in environmental engineering technology, environmental management, or related discipline
  • Five years of recent related experience in environmental engineering or environmental management, including experience in solid waste management
  • Training and / or experience in communications or public relations.
  • One of the following Professional Designations or equivalent : Certification from the Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals Board as an Environmental Professional (EP), Certification from the College of Applied Biology as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio), Certification from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Engineering Licensee (Eng. L.) with an environmental-related industry or scope, Certification with the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC as an Applied Science Technologist (AScT) with an environmental-related industry or scope.

This position is unionized, CUPE Local , and the hourly rate of pay is from $48.98 - $57.60.
