Overview
As a military member, weapons engineering technicians are responsible for performing corrective and preventive maintenance activities related to weapons systems, communications, radars, and maritime navigation aboard ships.
Main responsibilities include :
Work environment
Technicians mainly work onboard ships based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Esquimalt, British Columbia. They participate in unique adventures and face challenges specific to maritime work, often working in tight or exposed environments to repair and maintain equipment.
Regular shifts are typically day shifts onboard the assigned ship. In addition to routine tasks, subordinate weapons engineering technicians may perform other duties such as cleaning, painting, working in the cafeteria, or assisting with supplies.
Career options include regular force assignments, where you are posted to your first base after training, with potential relocations, or reserve force service, where you work part-time at a designated reserve unit, usually one evening a week and some weekends, with the possibility of full-time employment.
Enlistment programs
This position requires candidates to have completed at least grade 10 or secondary 4 in Quebec, with applied mathematics (mathematics 426 or TS 4 in Quebec). Physics courses are an asset. The ideal candidate may have a college diploma or a related civil profession certification, which the CAF will evaluate for recognition.
Foreign studies may be recognized. The Military Rank Study Subsidized Program (PIESMR) covers tuition fees for recruits enrolled in approved Canadian college programs, including basic military training and summer on-the-job training. Benefits include full salary, medical and dental care, and paid leave. Candidates commit to serving in the CAF for a specified period.
Training
Initial training begins with the Basic Military Qualification Course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, lasting about nine months, covering :
Further specialized training may be pursued at approved colleges or through on-the-job courses in areas like sonar operations, high-reliability welding, explosive safety inspection, and fiber optics. Naval environmental training is conducted at either Esquimalt or Halifax, focusing on general naval tasks, force protection, damage control, and survival exercises.
