Grounded in safety, quality, and ethics, our experts lead their fields with dedication, a creative spirit, and a vision for growth. We draw from more than 20 technical specialties worldwide and are devoted to fostering a community of diverse talents, backgrounds, and expertise. Here, you can apply your passion and collaborate with top environmental professionals on work that’s vital to our clients and the communities they serve.

Join a team that’s naturally committed to the environment.

Your Opportunity

Stantec’s aquatic ecology work in Atlantic Canada extends from the energetic marine environment in the Bay of Fundy to the barrens of Newfoundland and Labrador, supporting the sustainable development of mining, power, transportation, and infrastructure projects. Our team includes nationally recognized specialists in freshwater and marine ecology, fish and fish habitat, aquatic toxicology, and environmental assessment.

A role with Stantec offers the opportunity to work with experienced scientists and project managers while developing your career path. This position is ideal for someone who brings practical field experience, strong data analysis and interpretation skills, and the ability to contribute to high-quality technical reporting. The successful candidate will thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment and enjoy working on a diverse range of aquatic ecology projects across Atlantic Canada.

This role is ideal for someone who combines hands-on field expertise with strong data analysis, interpretation, and reporting skills, and thrives working on diverse, team-driven projects.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support aquatic field programs, including fish, fish habitat, benthic invertebrates, water quality, and sediment quality surveys for a variety of projects, in accordance with provincial and federal guidance and Stantec standard methods.

  • Manage, analyze, and interpret biological and chemical data, including fish, fish tissue, benthic invertebrates, water quality, and sediment quality data.

  • Conduct statistical analyses to evaluate spatial and temporal trends, significant differences, and guideline exceedances.

  • Prepare technical reports, field summaries, and supporting documentation for environmental assessments, permitting, and regulatory submissions.

  • Prepare or support permit applications, including Fisheries Act Requests for Review or Authorization applications and provincial watercourse alteration applications.

  • Lead and/or support proposal development, business development activities, and client or community engagement initiatives.

  • Actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment Program and follow Stantec’s safe work practices during field and office work.

  • Support other environmental service areas depending on project needs, interests, and abilities.

  • Travel, evening, weekend, and remote field work may be required.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Demonstrated experience completing aquatic field programs in freshwater, marine, and/or coastal environments, including fish capture, fish habitat assessment, benthic invertebrate sampling, and water and sediment quality surveys.

  • Experience using a range of fish capture methods and aquatic field equipment, including gill nets, fyke nets, minnow traps, electrofishing equipment, boats, and mobile data collection tools.

  • Strong ability to analyze, interpret, and report biological and chemical data, with proficiency using Microsoft Office and statistical software such as Excel, Systat, and/or R.

  • Working knowledge of applicable provincial and federal environmental regulations, guidelines, and permitting processes.

  • Strong technical writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports, permit applications, proposals, and other technical documents.

  • Adaptable and safety-focused, with the ability to solve problems in the field, work in a fast-paced team environment, and complete work in remote or challenging field conditions.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage time effectively.

  • Ability to lift and carry field equipment and samples up to 20 kg.

  • Willingness to travel for work, including occasional evening, weekend, and remote field assignments.

  • Valid driver’s license

Education and Experience

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Science (e.g., biology, environmental studies, or similar fields) and 3-5 years of experience related to aquatic ecology in Canada.
