Reporting to the Department Head of Library Services, and utilizing a service excellence approach, this position supports ARCA (Selkirk College’s digital repository) with cataloging and digitizing material, maintains the archival collections, manages serials, provides public services to library patrons, and provides administrative support to the library.
Currently, this position is 60% ARCA, Archives, and has also assumed 40% duties of Library Technician – Acquisitions which entails assisting with the purchase of print and digital resources for the library.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Builds and maintains ARCA, Selkirk College’s online institutional repository (IR) by: Preparing digital files of pdf, image, video, and audio for uploading to the IR. Editing metadata for all digital files and preparing metadata for uploading of records to the IR. Assisting faculty and staff from other departments with their ARCA submissions. Researching and preparing metadata for records lacking key descriptive elements. Reviewing posted records for accuracy and make corrections as necessary. Researching and preparing metadata for records lacking key descriptive elements. Collecting or preparing (as appropriate) PDF files of eligible articles, whether from faculty or other sources. Preparing, reformatting, and editing electronic files including image, video, and data files, for all procedures. and according to established digital specifications. Assisting with training faculty, staff, and students in the submission processes.
- Maintains archival collections – providing access to researchers, reshelving archival material, maintaining archival material in appropriate storage conditions, retrieving archival material as requested by Selkirk staff, or the public.
- Performs acquisition duties including: Researching publications and products for library purchase. Negotiating fair pricing of materials with publishers or jobbers; inputting orders, recording and downloading catalogue records in ILS. Receiving materials, verifying invoices, inputting payment into ILS and processing items for cataloguer. Ordering, processing and maintaining standing order materials; processing book donations; maintaining annual subscriptions; updating changes in ILS.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Library Technician Diploma.
- Understanding of DRUPAL software.
- Courses or certificates relating to working with archival materials.
- Ability to use RDA (Rules for Description & Access) for cataloguing digital objects.
- Experience with website management – familiarity with Springshare Software’s Libguides & Libguides CMS an asset.
- Minimum 3 years’ library experience in a post-secondary institution. Experience maintaining websites, blogs & social media and working with a digital repository.
Education and Experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment.
- Knowledge of HTML and CSS and general website management
- Working knowledge of Integrated Library System (ILS).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Excellent customer service skills.
This is a regular, full-time (100%) position commencing May 4, 2026. The role is currently comprised of 60% ARCA/Archives duties (Pay Grid 8, $33.38 per hour) and 40% Library Technician – Acquisitions duties (Pay Grid 9, $34.68 per hour). The Acquisitions component is a temporary assignment covering a leave and ends on September 12, 2026, or upon the return of the incumbent. Upon conclusion of the temporary assignment, the successful candidate will revert to 100% ARCA/Archives duties at Pay Grid 8 ($33.38 per hour). Salary will be in accordance with the PPWC Collective Agreement.
