Position : Director, Engagement

Organization : Efficiency Canada

Location : This position operates remotely. Permanent residency in Ontario is preferred.

Position Overview

The Director, Engagement plays an integral role in furthering Efficiency Canada’s work on energy efficiency policy. The position is responsible for developing and implementing our strategy to build political power in the energy efficiency sector through the effective mobilization of our research. It helps to coordinate and strengthen all of the various relationships we have with the sector, including the design and implementation of services for organizations and people in the sector. The Director, Engagement is part of our Senior Management Team and contributes to our mission through providing guidance and mentorship to a team of engagement staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Lead overall strategy on our political power / organizing efforts

Guide the development and delivery of engagement campaign tactics that mobilize the energy efficiency sector to advance our policy ideas.

  • Map the energy efficiency sector to identify supporters of energy efficiency policy.
  • Support government relations efforts through the development of a policymaker outreach and engagement strategy.
  • Work with Director, Communications, Director, Research and Director, Project Management to implement activities laid out in our Annual Plan.
  • Contribute to the ongoing renewal of our Strategic Directions document and development of Policy Area goals.
  • Provide strategic coordination of all sector engagement activities
  • Develop a coherent strategy to ensure sector engagement activities meet policy area goals.

  • Coordinate efforts of key organizational leaders involved in high-level relationship-building, to ensure our stakeholder engagement is consistent and strategic.
  • Develop partnerships with NGOs with a similar mandate in Canada and around the world.
  • Develop engagement services for those that support Efficiency Canada
  • Maintain consistent communication with Allies and sector leaders to share policy information and understand needs.

  • Develop a suite of value-added services for energy efficiency organizations, consistent with our policy and campaign goals.
  • Design and maintain sustained growth for the Allies program and network.
  • Work with Carleton University Advancement team to leverage Allies sponsorships and fundraising.
  • Work with Director, Project Management and Manager, Finance to develop appropriate processes to support Allies.
  • Manage / mentor a group of passionate engagement team members
  • Provide mentorship and leadership to the Engagement team.

  • Work alongside the Executive Director on determining professional development plans and ensuring continued growth for the Engagement team.
  • Foster continuous learning across Efficiency Canada on the role Engagement plays in helping to advance our policy area goals.
  • Support technology infrastructure needs for the Engagement team (e.g., Nationbuilder).
  • Qualifications

  • Strong experience in developing and implementing policy change campaigns, with special focus on organizing stakeholders to achieve a policy outcome.
  • Deep understanding of the theory of change behind advocating for policy change; specifically, using research to organize multiple voices to call for changes to policy.
  • Strong experience advancing energy efficiency or relevant climate policy issues in Canada.
  • Genuine interest and experience in policy advocacy and political change and / or background in political organizing.
  • Ability to build meaningful relationships in a community with a diversity of perspectives.
  • Experience building strategies around engagement and fund development activities (e.g. sponsorships, small scale donations, supporting grant applications) and planning for sustained growth.
  • Leadership experience managing ambitious and passionate team members.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to organize team-based work to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with collaboration tools such as Google Workspace, MS Office, Slack, Asana, Nationbuilder, Zoom.
  • Key Requirements

  • Education : University degree in public policy, political science, economics, law, engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience : Experience in developing and implementing campaign strategies; an ability to build a deep network of energy efficiency sector leaders; strong background / understanding of government relations and policy change theories; fundraising; and a strong understanding of Canadian energy efficiency and / or climate policy.
  • Leadership : Experience managing / mentoring a team, and working alongside other senior leaders to achieve common goals.
  • Soft skills : Strong communication, collaboration, relationships building, project management skills and sense of humour.
  • Additional requirements : Bilingualism in English and French is a strong asset.
  • Reporting Structure : The Director, Engagement reports directly to the Executive Director at Efficiency Canada.

    Compensation

  • 100,000-115,000 annual salary
  • 18 wellness days.
  • Additional days off around statutory long weekends from April to September, an annual winter holiday shutdown, and your birthday off.
