About the role
Join the Granville Island team in the Building Operator position. The Building Operator is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and repair of the entire Granville Island site, encompassing 38 acres and 40 buildings. This includes ground works, utility services, building systems, and all related equipment.

Through regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and timely repairs, the role helps ensure that Granville Island remains a clean, comfortable, and safe environment for the approximately 11 million visitors it welcomes each year. The position also plays a key role in maintaining code compliance and reducing risk and liability for the owner.

Scheduled Shift Monday to Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (37.5 hour work week)


Salary & Shift Premiums

Base Salary:
$68,344.65 annually

Shift Premium:
As part of the collective agreement, all employees receive a standard 5.75% shift premium, automatically increasing annual earnings to approximately $72,274.47 before any additional shift premiums are applied.


Additional Premiums (When required):

  • Evening & Overnight Shifts (4:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m.): +$2.50/hour
  • Weekend Shifts (Saturday & Sunday): +$2.25/hour


These premiums recognize flexibility and commitment, resulting in meaningful increases to total compensation. Whether optimizing your schedule or supporting critical operations, your time and contribution are valued.


What you’ll do:

  • Provide initial troubleshooting for complex repair requests relating to plumbing, HVAC operations, spray park and water slide and electrical. Call in contractors as needed and oversee contractors' work.
  • Provide guidance, instruction, and direction, to junior team members that are carrying out repairs or preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Perform both reactive and preventative repair and mainteance. Inspect, operate, maintain and repair mechanical and electrical systems and equipment including boilers, chillers, HVAC, pumps, generators, life safety systems, ice machines, grease traps, toilets, and the infrastructure on the Island such as the water lines, storm sewers, irrigation system, electrical and water distribution systems, roadways boardwalks and sidewalks.
  • Ensuring all building equipment is in good running order and relevant certifications are up to date through regular inspections and assigned preventative maintenance tasks as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Maintain records of maintenance, inspections and equipment related to work orders and asset management. Experience using Yardi is an asset.
  • Acts as the Maintenance Supervisor, in their absence & limited on call may be requested


What you should have:

  • A post-secondary trade certification in at least one specialized area within the building trades.
  • A minimum of 5 years of equivalent work experience in building maintenance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the key areas of plumbing repairs, HVAC operations and controls and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Organizational, coaching and communication skills.
  • A valid driver’s license.
