Contract Type : Full-Time Temporary

Reports to : Executive Director

Salary : $40,000 annually

ABOUT CAIRN

The Cairn Family of Camps is a small nonprofit overnight summer camp, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in Canada.

Cairn offers four summer camp programs Glen Mhor, Iona Trip, Integration and Leader in Training all united by one mission : to share God’s love by providing transformative programming and supportive ministry.

In all programs, Cairn creates an inclusive environment where all campers, participants, staff, and community members are provided opportunities to create connections and grow.

Cairn’s operating season runs from May through September, with summer camp programs offered through July and August, and retreat and rental programming taking place in May, June and September.

CAMP DIRECTOR JOB SUMMARY

The Camp Director’s key mandate is to plan, coordinate, and oversee Cairn’s programs. The Camp Director will also provide leadership and direction to the camp staff and volunteers, and adhere to all legislative standards and requirements.

Working with the Executive Director, the Camp Director will foster and implement growth and development strategies for Cairn through effective community outreach, fundraising and marketing initiatives.

When camp programs are running (May to September), the Camp Director is responsible for overseeing staff training and development, program delivery, camper wellbeing, and internal and external communications.

In the off-season (October to April), the Camp Director oversees Cairn’s program development, staff recruitment and hiring, marketing initiatives, camper communications, and alumni engagement.

At all times, the Camp Director works closely with the Executive Director to assist in maintaining Cairn’s strategic priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Overall Responsibilities : Promote and uphold Cairn Family of Camps mission statement, values, faith statement, and strategic direction.

Plan, coordinate, and oversee Cairn’s programs and initiatives.Develop and execute marketing and communications strategies to promote camp programs and engage stakeholders.

Manage operations within approved budget and fiscal policies, assisting in budget preparation and management.Support fundraising activities, as assigned, by the Executive Director and Fundraising Committee.

Staff Development, Management, and Training : Ensure the ongoing wellness, morale, and development of all staff.Facilitate recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision with the support of the Executive Director.

Coach, mentor, and evaluate staff in conjunction with the seasonal supervision team and the support of the Executive Director

Program Development and Management : Plan and oversee day-to-day programs and services for all Cairn’s programs.Ensure that programs are focused around and represent Cairn’s mission, vision, and values.

Develop and provide training to seasonal staff.Ensure that all applicable regulations, standards, and legal are followed, and that all programs and program areas are properly checked and maintained.

Ensure compliance to all Ontario Camps Association (OCA) standards.

Faith Formation : Provide faith formation leadership to camp staff.With the support of Faith Formation Board Member, establish a faith curriculum for campers.

Recruit and provide leadership to Chaplains that attend weekly camp programs.

Marketing Responsibilities : Execute annual marketing strategy to achieve Cairn’s goals and objectives. Maintain consistent branding and messaging across marketing, public relations, and external communications.

Maintain regular communication with Cairn’s stakeholders, including campers, camper families, staff, churches, alumni, donors, and local communities.

Develop and implement innovative marketing strategies to attract new campers, volunteers, and stakeholders.

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a coordinator or manager position at a camp, or equivalent experience in personnel leadership.
  • Personal skills : problem-solving ability, professionalism, leadership, empathy, conflict resolution, organization, adaptability, growth mindset, collaboration
  • Standard First Aid / CPR-C or equivalent
  • Clear Police Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening

The following certifications are not required but will be considered an asset

  • G Class Drivers License
  • National Lifeguard certification
  • Food Handlers Certification
  • Level 1 or 2 Challenge Course Practitioner

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

  • Work Schedule Off Season (September-April) : 5 days / week Requires some weekends and some evenings with alternate time off, Peak Operating Season (May-September) : Hours as required
  • Work Location Off season (October-April) : Combination of working remotely (majority of time) and working from remote locations (occasionally), In season (May-September) : Onsite (private accommodation provided)
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be independently able to safely traverse campgrounds and engage with campers and staff in all camp settings, alert and receptive to any issues.

The employee is occasionally required to operate objects or tools, and reach with arms and hands. At times, the employee may need to climb, balance, stoop or kneel.

The job requires frequent light lifting (5-10 lbs.) and infrequent heavy lifting of up to 50 lbs. The employee will be asked to operate a motorized vehicle.

The employee will work in the field and be exposed to all types of weather conditions.

COMPENSATION

Compensation is dependent on experience, qualifications, and hours worked. Expected salary range is $40,000. The position includes room and board (May to September).
