The Mining, Oil and Gas Branch is part of the Minerals, Petroleum and Geoscience Division within the Department of Business, Mining, Trade and Job Creation. The branch ensures the responsible development of Manitoba’s oil, gas and mineral resources through regulatory approvals, inspections, data management, and disposition management.

Duties: The Data Engineer role is responsible for developing and optimizing data management systems that ensure the integrity, accessibility, and security of petroleum-related information. By enabling accurate data collection, storage, and analysis, this position supports regulatory compliance, enhances operational efficiency, and drives data-informed decision-making. Acting as the central point for internal and external data requests, the role ensures timely and reliable reporting for stakeholders. Qualifications:
Essential: - Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Engineering, or a related discipline from a recognized institution. A combination of related education and experience may be considered.
- Proven experience in database design, data modeling, and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
- Proficiency in SQL and at least one programming/scripting language (e.g., Python, R).
- Understanding of regulatory compliance and industry standards related to petroleum data.
- Hands-on experience with data integration tools, automation frameworks, and workflow orchestration (e.g., Apache Airflow).
- Strong skills in data visualization and dashboard development using tools like Power BI, Tableau, or similar.
- Strong verbal communication skills for collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
- Strong written communication skills for collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver within deadlines.
Desired: - Relevant certifications in data engineering, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), or database technologies are considered an asset.
- Familiarity with cloud-based data solutions and API integrations.
- Knowledge of data quality assurance, metadata management, and data governance principles.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

- Travel throughout the province may be required
