Position Purpose
The Design Technologist reports to a Distribution Design Supervisor and supports the Department in creating design estimates and drawings for overhead and underground utility systems.
Responsibilities
- Create detailed designs of overhead and underground systems in CADD software.
- Manage scope, budget and material requirements for all assigned projects.
- Perform calculations and prepare detailed schematics for system expansions and rebuilds.
- Liaise with city, region, utilities, developers, contractors and other stakeholders to secure permits and agreements.
- Provide technical support to municipalities, designers, contractors and customers to ensure compliance.
- Address customer complaints and advise on standards and fees.
- Monitor construction via site reviews and coordinate joint use transfers.
- Review easement documents and provide comments for expansions and rebuild projects.
- Prepare offer’s to connect and draft plan comments outlining financial, construction and legal obligations.
- Determine load requirements from site meetings and / or service applications.
- Coordinate system schematics with design technicians and control room operators.
- Perform field line staking.
- Mentor and train other Design Technologists and Co‑Op students.
- Ensure designs meet regulatory standards (ESA 22 / 04, CSA, Alectra policies).
- Maintain compliance with safety legislation, EUSR rules and internal responsibility system.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Specialized Knowledge
Completion of a 3‑year Engineering Technology program (Electrical Power or Civil Structural preferred).Eligibility for OACETT registration.Experience
Minimum five (5) years of related experience.Skills, Abilities & Competencies
Advanced skills in CAD, GIS, document management, work order management, customer information systems, word processing, spreadsheets and presentations.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Flexible attitude toward work assignment.Ability to solve moderately complex problems.Valid Class G driver’s license.Familiarity with design of overhead and underground distribution systems up to 44 kV.In‑depth knowledge of design criteria : tension, guying, conductor load, etc.Knowledge of construction standards, materials, approval processes, PUCC’s, permits.Knowledge of Ontario Energy Board Distribution System Code and other regulatory requirements.Understanding of civil infrastructure (water main, sewer, road construction, soil conditions) and ability to interpret plan and profile drawings.Who We Are
