The community is fully accessible by road and situated near the Ontario border. The school serves students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 11, delivering the Ontario curriculum alongside daily Algonquin language and culture programming. We are urgently seeking a High School Math Teacher (Grades 7–11) to instruct students and improve their understanding of math concepts, problem-solving, and numeracy skills. You will support their progress toward graduation and post-secondary education, close learning gaps, build confidence, and engage them in a supportive, community-focused environment. The ability to differentiate instruction and provide targeted support to students who are behind in their learning is essential. The ideal candidate will have experience working with students with special education needs and behavioral issues. Strong classroom management is a must. The ability to build trust and manage challenging behaviors is crucial for success. Duties: Deliver mathematics instruction to high school students, focusing on closing learning gaps and building confidence in reluctant learners. Use differentiated instruction to support students with low engagement and those behind in their learning, adapting teaching methods as needed. Choose and develop relevant, culturally appropriate materials that reflect students' experiences and keep them engaged. Manage classroom behavior using clear expectations, positive reinforcement, and restorative practices to address conflicts and promote accountability. Apply trauma-informed strategies to ensure a safe and supportive learning space for all students. Develop and manage Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in collaboration with the Manager of Specialized Services. Regularly assess student progress and provide constructive feedback to students and parents. Take responsibility for maintaining accurate attendance records and providing timely assessments, report cards, and other relevant student documentation. Build strong, trusting relationships with students to engage them and support their learning. Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, and other professionals to support students' academic, social, and emotional development. Integrate Algonquin cultural teachings and practices into the curriculum. Participate in professional development to enhance skills in teaching, behavior management, trauma-informed teaching, and supporting reluctant learners. Contribute to the school community through meetings, events, and extracurricular activities. Mandatory Requirements: Bachelor of Education degree or higher from an accredited university. Must hold a valid teaching certification from a Canadian province or territory. Candidates who do not already hold Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification must be willing to obtain it within a specified time. A background in mathematics (degree or qualifications in mathematics or math education). Experience teaching high school mathematics, with strong classroom management skills in challenging environments. Must pass a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). Preferred Skills and Knowledge: Experience teaching First Nations students and understanding their unique learning needs and cultural context. Ability to differentiate instruction to support students with learning difficulties. Experience developing and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Ability to collaborate with special education staff and counselors to support students' academic, social, and emotional development. Experience managing difficult classroom behaviors to ensure effective teaching. Open to using restorative practices to resolve conflicts and promote accountability. Willingness to learn and apply trauma-informed practices to support student well-being.
