OVERVIEW

JOB PURPOSE :

The Associate Counsel, Licensing & Accreditation is responsible for developing, drafting, and revising content to support the Law Society’s licensing and program accreditation processes. Associate Counsel works closely with the Senior Counsel & Manager, Entry Level Competence, team members and other employees to review and implement processes to support changes to licensing process protocols and policies and maintain defensibility of entrance requirements. Associate Counsel also participates in drafting and revising existing policies and content related to new initiatives and projects.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED :

  • An LLB or JD, plus a Class L1 licence with Law Society of Ontario
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience either practicing law or working in the area of legal professional development
  • Editing and drafting experience is strongly preferred, including experience drafting policies, process documents, resources, and web content

Solid understanding of the Law Society’s mandate, services, legislation, and policies

Solid understanding of the licensing process policies and protocols

Excellent or superior writing skills, including the ability to write in a clear and concise manner

Outstanding attention to detail

Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a high-volume environment

Ability to work independently and collaborate with team members

Familiarity with equity and fairness principles and initiatives

Proficiency in the French language is an asset

Adult education coursework or experience is an asset

Reasons through, interprets, and applies complex spoken and written information

Proficiency in computer word processing, email, and the Internet or Intranet

Intermediate or higher level of familiarity with Excel is an asset

  • KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

    Client / Customer Service Delivery

  • Associate Counsel manages and / or participates in the development of content related to licensing programs for lawyers and paralegals, including reference materials, policies, forms, and related web content.
  • Recognizes and addresses the interaction between by-laws, guidelines, rules, and policies, and their operational implementation.
  • Applies an understanding of the regulatory framework to content development.
  • Policy Development

  • Develops, drafts, and reviews policies, procedures, practices, and guidelines pertaining to the licensing process, including experiential training, examination administration, and examination accommodations.
  • Maintains currency of online content to reflect changes to policy and procedure and respond to emerging issues in a professional licensure context.
  • Team Membership

  • Fosters a positive team environment by clarifying goals, building the commitment of individuals, valuing team input, recognizing the contributions of volunteers, contractors, and other Law Society employees, resolving conflicts, strengthening the team’s collective skills, and encouraging creativity and problem-solving.
  • Provides work coordination to staff, including program coordinators and others, to ensure the optimal and timely development of content.
  • Research

  • Plans for the implementation of innovations for the ongoing improvement of all aspects of the Law Society’s licensing and accreditation activities.
  • WORKING ARRANGEMENT

    The Law Society has introduced a Distributed Workforce Model to leverage flexibility and agility, and to maximize employee productivity and engagement. Work arrangements will be determined by role and departmental requirements. The working arrangement for this position has been classified as hybrid, where the employee will regularly flex their work location between home and office.
