This is an outstanding and unique opportunity at a large company to work as a Director, Legal and oversee the applicable legal and regulatory needs. This lawyer will work closely with the leadership team, provide strategic guidance, advise on operations and effectively manage legal risk. This Director, Legal will oversee relations with various regulators and remain current on upcoming developments, work on sophisticated matters and advise re: new business initiatives. This is a hybrid role.

Responsibilities:

• Guide and work closely with the applicable leaders re: regulatory, strategic and operational objectives and advise senior executives re: changing regulatory requirements;
• Lead corresponding projects, organize resources in collaboration with other stakeholders;
• Provide guidance, leadership and coaching to team members;
• Act as a liaison between business units and regulators;
• Advocate re: new regulations and initiatives and oversee relationships with applicable institutions;
• Work with the Corporate Secretary re: Board matters;
• Propose solutions, manage legal risks and oversee applicable educational initiatives;

Experience:

The ideal candidate will have/be:

• Approximately 5-8 years of strong legal experience at a well-established law firm or In House, in one or more of the following practice areas: banking, corporate lending, financial services, securities, regulatory or corporate law;
• Member in good standing of a Canadian Law Society;
• Experience dealing with sophisticated corporate and commercial matters;
• Experience working directly with applicable regulators;
• Knowledge of banking, securities, derivatives etc. a strong asset;
• Strong business acumen, motivated and strive for excellence;
• Team oriented and solid interpersonal skills;
• Strong communication abilities, professional and responsible;
• Can effectively handle competing priorities;
• Solution-oriented and client focused;
• Can effectively provide strategic guidance;
• Effective at building key relationships with stakeholders;
• Bilingual in English and French
