What You’ll Do
- Developing strategies and analyses around pricing strategy and negotiation, Alternative Fee Arrangements (AFA’s) alternatives
- Researching and identifying existing / historical firm matters that may provide a baseline for billing attorneys in developing budgets for new matters.
- Support partners and the Business Development Team through the giving of advice, preparation of RFP responses and other presentations, and participation in presentations (internally and directly to clients) as it relates to pricing
- Liaising with the Pricing Committee in making decisions on pricing alternatives and discount requests, working with lawyers on matter profitability analysis in relation to historical, existing and potential client matters or portfolios of work
- Participate in the annual timekeeper rate review process, including managing lawyer feedback and updating reporting and analysis as needed, and benchmarking firm rates against competitor’s rates
- Support lawyers in the annual client rate review process, including communicating with lawyers to identify clients and matters that require advanced notice of annual rate increases and / or e-billing requirements for rate approvals as needed
- Develop and support matter budget models and templates, legal project management (LPM) tools, fee data analytics and other pricing tools to streamline the budgeting and matter management process for client matters
- Assisting lawyers with individual matter management to negotiated fee caps including monitoring where the fee spend is relative to the cap, alerting matter management lawyers and helping them with strategies to maintain or get matters back on a profitability track
- Develop reporting and relevant pricing analysis on AFAs and post matter analysis / retrospective analysis of specific matters to be determined by Firm
- Oversee the Firm-wide implementation of Phase, Task and Activity (PTA) codes and work with Firm members to develop metrics around the new codes, if required
- Provide required support to promote service delivery innovation initiatives, including alternative staffing approaches, the use of technology tools for different legal processes, and the reengineering of legal services
- Maintain up to date business intelligence knowledge of legal market, service delivery trends and newly developed legal technology
- Support the development and implementation of legal technology tools at the firm and driving the adoption of those tools.
- Ability to work with industry and client teams on pricing models
What You Bring
Relevant university degree or diploma and 1-3 years of relevant experience, ideally acquired in a legal or professional services organizationGeneral understanding of the fundamental elements of pricing and able to work with large volume of dataProficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint and collaboration tools to support analytics, Revenue Plan and variance processesProfessional maturity including strong interpersonal skills, tact and discretion, high aptitude for quantitative tasks, including financial analysisMust be able to maintain strict confidentiality of the firm’s internal affairs and client information.Ability to think strategically and perform well in dealing with ambiguityAbility to work in fast-paced environmentStrong communication (verbal and written) skills are required to build and maintain effective relationships with senior management, lawyers and staff.Experience with Thompson Reuter’s Elite 3E or similar billing systems; familiarity with law firm billing processes and pricing structure is preferredMcMillan Offers You
