Apply Now Posting Number : COOP -25-06 Job Type : Co-op, Temporary-Full-time, up to 8 Months, Union Salary Range : $22.05 per hour Location : Barrie, ON - Onsite (see below for more details) Posted :  Wednesday, December 18, 2024 Application Deadline : Friday, January 17, 2025 at 11 : 59 pm The Opportunity The Infrastructure Department is comprised of five Branches, including three Design and Construction Branches, the Wastewater Operations Branch, and the Water Operations Branch. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment, and distribution; wastewater collection and treatment; and the design and construction of the City's infrastructure including treatment plants, pump stations, roads, sewers, watermains, sidewalks, stormwater management ponds, water towers and reservoirs, etc. The City of Barrie is fortunate to have access to two sources of drinking water : groundwater from an aquifer and surface water from Kempenfelt Bay. The City of Barrie is looking for students to work in the Drinking Water System to support the Water Supply and Water Customer Service sections. The successful applicant to this position will perform and / or assist with the operation and maintenance of the City of Barrie’s Water Treatment, Water Distribution and Supply, and Water Distribution sub-systems - which may include :

  • Assist with sampling, testing, or monitoring
  • Assist with hydrant flushing, which may include loops, dead ends, transmission main and system flushing
  • Assist with monitoring and maintenance associated with remote flush-boxes
  • Assist with the inspection, maintenance and cleaning of our water facilities including the Surface Water Treatment Plant, Low-lift Pumping Station, Wells, Reservoirs and Booster Pumping Stations

Education (degree / diploma / certifications)

  • Currently enrolled in a recognized College or University Co-op program, preferably in Environmental Technology / Technician, and returning to full-time studies
  • Must hold valid Operator-in-Training Certificates from the Ministry of the Enviroment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) in Water Distribution & Supply and Water Treatment
  • Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and / or returning the following year Knowledge / Skill / Ability
  • Ability to work in a high paced and dynamic environment
  • Dependable, reliable and able to work well with minimal supervision
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Basic computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Conditions of Employment

  • Must hold valid Operator-in-Training Certificates from the Ministry of the Enviroment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) in Water Distribution & Supply and Water Treatment
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Drivers Licence in good standing
  • CSA-approved safety footwear in good condition
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Please note that this is a requirement for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Procedure. Existing employees will be grandparented from this requirement.
