What is the Opportunity?
As part of an alliance agreement, Aecon has been awarded a contract in an Aecon‑led partnership with Kiewit Nuclear Canada by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the execution phase on the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) in Clarington, Ontario. Beginning in 2025, Aecon will support the construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.
Reporting to the DNNP Site Welding Manager, the Welding Engineer will assist in the planning, organization, control, integration and completion of works related to the welding scope for the SMR project and oversee all on‑site welding activities related to the reactor building, reactor vessel and piping installation and conventional scopes.
What You'll Do Here
- Oversee technical aspects of projects and initiatives undertaken by the Reactor Building and Conventional team, specifically wrt welding and construction.
- Prepare Aecon Technical Specifications (ATS’s) or Proposal RFQ’s to support proposal or project execution.
- Evaluate vendors’ quotations and recommend vendor selection based on performance specifications, pricing and guarantees.
- Manage, implement, and provide technical guidance to execute procedure qualification records using ASME, CWB and/or AWS welding codes.
- Review and produce technical documentation in relation to construction and welding sequencing.
- Coordinate mechanical testing of PQRs, WPSs, WPQ and WMQs with local labs.
- Recommend continuous improvement of welding innovation at Aecon Nuclear.
- Coordinate with vendors to ensure timely and robust NDE schedules required by the Project Specification and applicable Welding Codes and Standards.
- Communicate with welding wire (consumable) and welding equipment vendors to review, assess, procure and commission welding-related equipment.
- Review code of construction and customer technical requirements to provide technically accurate direction.
- Liaise with Aecon’s Welding Center of Excellence as needed to support construction welding initiatives.
- Ensure activities are performed in accordance with written and approved policy, standards, programs and applicable procedures.
- Serve as liaison between designer and construction teams to maintain information flow and resolve issues.
- Maintain high standards for final product quality.
- Own and manage Non-Conformance Reporting for material and welding activities.
- Be based on site to support assembly and construction activities.
- Carry out site safety inspections.
- Participate in company-wide initiatives aimed at continuous improvement.
- Make technical presentations to executives and customers as needed.
- Participate in Construction, Inspection and Test Plan (CITP) reviews for all welding scopes to ensure correct WPS’s/procedures are utilized.
What You Bring To The Team
- Post‑secondary education in an engineering discipline (Mechanical, Materials, Mechatronics, etc.) with an emphasis on welding.
- 5+ years of experience in welding within a construction environment.
- Previous experience with ASME, CWB and/or AWS welding codes.
- Knowledge of ASME Code Class 1, 2, 3, MC, A & B vessels; Class 1, 2, 3, A & B piping systems; and Class CS & SM core support structures.
- Familiarity with welding principles (arc welding basics, types of welding, etc.).
- Experience with robotics or semi‑automated machinery is an asset.
- Experience with weld development initiatives such as PQRs, WPSs, and codes of construction.
- Experience selecting welding consumables for fabrication.
- Experience with basic metallurgical analysis, techniques, and technical report reviews.
- Proficient in construction industry software (Primavera, AutoCAD, SAP, etc.).
- Strong organizational skills to handle multiple deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
- Capability to produce solid models and 2D manufacturing drawings; Autodesk Inventor or equivalent CAD is an asset.
- Preferred experience working under a Nuclear Quality Program; knowledge of N690 and N299 standards.
- Background in Construction Project Welding and Fabrication specialism is desired.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral.
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills; ability to prioritize and multi‑task; service‑oriented.
- Flexibility to work in both field and office.
