What You'll Be Doing

In this role you’ll work within a team of climate specialists to help develop and deliver the Community Climate Capacity initiative with communities across the Province of Nova Scotia. As the Adaptation Specialist, you will work directly with Climate Leads & Navigators and their partner communities to build their internal capacity for climate action and adaptation initiatives. You will support funding applications, community outreach and engagement, guide local level climate work, and visit communities around the province. This role is highly innovative and collaborative, working alongside the Community Climate Capacity team, our partner communities and organizations, and other departments within Clean. You will provide technical expertise and support for the Community Climate Capacity team through data gathering and analysis, risk assessments, reporting, adaptation planning, and project implementation. You are an enthusiastic, creative, and motivated individual who can work effectively with colleagues across disciplines to implement meaningful local climate change action.

Job Requirements

  • Graduate of a university or community college diploma program in geography, sustainability, environmental engineering, technology, sciences or studies, urban planning, energy, or equivalent.
  • Two to Four years of experience in climate change, adaptation and or resilience work.
  • Strong organizational, teamwork and / or project management skills and relevant subject-matter knowledge, as appropriate for the role. Mid-level analytical, strategic thinking, team leadership, problem-solving and financial skills.
  • Demonstrable understanding and application of the principles of sustainability, climate risk, climate change adaptation, mitigation, community resilience, and building and infrastructure sciences.
  • Must be familiar with climate change impacts in Nova Scotia and the existing environmental policies and regulations.
  • Understanding and experience working with Geographic Information Systems for analysis, monitoring, asset management, climate and flood data interpretation

Job Responsibilities

  • Support a team of Climate Leads, Navigators and communities in their Adaptation work.
  • Lead and support the scoping and delivery of adaptation projects to meet the needs of the participating communities.
  • Work closely with stakeholders, regulators, landowners and other staff for adaptation activities, including the acquisition of permits and approvals for monitoring and project implementation.
  • Support the assessment, monitoring, and delivery of adaptation works.
  • Plan and lead field work, ensuring best practices and safety requirements are met in the field.
  • Manage and analyze large datasets using different softwares, including Geographic Information Systems.
  • Ensure effective communication within the team and with external partners, maintaining organizational standards.
  • Provide timely updates and information about community projects to the Technical Manager.
  • Overseeing the preparation and submission of accurate and professional project reports.
  • Participate in, and lead community outreach events including formal presentations, and meetings with community interest groups.
  • Identify funding sources and support communities through the development of applications, including project scope, workplans and budgets.
  • Support the delivery of other programming as needed.
  • Represent Clean at various stakeholder and partner engagements.
  • Job Benefits

    $65,000 – $72,500

    A successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on various factors such as skills, experience, training and credentials, as well as other business purposes or needs.
