Park and Sports Field Operator
Responsibilities
- Maintain official sports field dimensions for baseball diamonds, soccer pitches, bowling green, etc.; perform proper lining and grooming procedures to ensure safe playable surfaces; clean outdoor sports facilities including benches, backstops, fence lines, under bleachers while attending scheduled tournaments and fulfilling set‑up requirements; carry out tasks with minimal disruption to play.
- Splash pad maintenance and daily recording; litter pick‑up and trash removal; washroom maintenance; grass maintenance equipment maintenance and servicing; playground maintenance; set‑up/take‑down of required equipment and items for special events; repair benches, fences, bleachers; grass cutting, weed eating, pruning shrubs and trees; maintain garden beds; trail grooming; shoreline clean‑up.
- Assist with inspecting and monitoring outdoor pool equipment; aid in maintaining pool by cleaning, painting, vacuuming, shocking and chlorinating.
- Graffiti removal from buildings and structures; cleaning, painting, basic carpentry and plumbing repairs; monitor and record building systems (HVAC, security, fire systems); stripping and waxing floors.
- Foster productive public relations and engagement as community interface, while providing exceptional customer service.
- Operate and maintain tools, equipment and vehicles (grass maintenance equipment, tractors, trucks, front‑end loaders, water tanks and small equipment including all auxiliary attachments) safely and efficiently.
- Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and report defects to the immediate supervisor.
- Maintain daily written records of work‑related activities.
- Engage in laboring duties: climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, stooping, walking, handling materials to assist in maintaining Norfolk County facilities and infrastructure; work outdoors.
- Provide exceptional customer service.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled or recently graduated in a University or College program in Horticultural Technician, Landscape Technician, Environmental Technician, Turf Management, Agriculture, General Carpentry or Recreation and Leisure (or related field).
- Valid province of Ontario Class “G” licence and access to a reliable vehicle, including ability to provide a driver’s abstract when requested during recruitment.
- Ability to work in a team environment, accept and follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality with minimal supervision, and follow all Norfolk County Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively.
- Good time management, interpersonal and communication skills. Must be motivated, hardworking and able to work outside in all weather (hot, dusty, cold and wet).
- Ability to safely operate various tools and equipment related to general maintenance.
- Must have green patch CSA approved safety boots, 6″‑8″ to cover ankle, suede or leather.
Employment Conditions
- Must be willing to work weekends, evenings and holidays.
- Employment is conditional upon attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term.
- At time of application must be enrolled in a post‑secondary education institution or institution of higher learning.
- Applicants must submit a criminal record check (dated within the last 3 months) from their local police service for approval prior to commencing employment.
