School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) is located in the southern Interior of British Columbia, Canada and serves the Lower Kootenay Band and the communities of Kaslo, Meadow Creek, Crawford Bay, Creston, Wynndel, Yahk, Nelson, Salmo, South Slocan, Winlaw, Slocan, and the surrounding rural areas. The School Board Office is located in Nelson, B.C. Our schools are dispersed geographically and range in size and composition :

  • an extensive array of program options, including Aboriginal Education, Late French Immersion, Outdoor Programs, and a strong International Program.

The annual pay range for a full time teacher is $63,367 to $111,488, with placement on the range based on experience and qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement.

School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) has a vacancy for a 0.2 FTE Term Teacher librarian at Blewett Elementary in Nelson, BC to join our team of professionals in delivering a quality educational program to our students.

Expectations for the library role includes managing library and learning commons resources. Additionally, it is expected the librarian will be a literacy specialist and support our school literacy goals through an inclusive model. Collaboration and co-teaching with teachers on literacy units, instruction, assessment, and review of data will be required.

The awarded applicant will have recent demonstrated successful experience working in a multi-graded environment and collaborating with school staff. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of inclusion theories and practices, and trauma informed schools. Additionally, they must deeply understand the BC Ed Plan, the district directions and the school mission, vision, and goals. They will be a person who is continually striving to improve pedagogy in a changing educational environment with a view towards contributing to school culture, collegiality and student success and achievement.

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor of Education
  • A valid BC teaching certificate through the BC Ministry of Education, Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • Required Qualifications :

  • Masters’ degree in Library Studies, Technology, Archival Studies, English, or similar OR a Bachelors’ degree in Library Studies, Technology, English AND significant experience in Library
  • Teachers applying for this position must also possess the following attributes :

  • Recent, demonstrated successful experience an elementary multi-grade setting
  • An understanding of current positive behavioural intervention strategies
  • An understanding of trauma informed practices
  • An understanding of inclusion, the development of class profiles, and universal design strategies
  • An ability to use data to inform decisions
  • An ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
  • Confidence in team teaching and design thinking
  • Strategic planning and implementation skills
  • Willingness to work closely with parents and community members;
  • Excellent classroom management skills;
  • Working knowledge of the BC Ed Plan, current instructional practices, and curriculum
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to be flexible
  • The ideal candidate will be expected to :

  • Communicate effectively with staff and parents
  • Be familiar with the BC Ed plan, school district board goals and school goals
  • Implement school wide strategies to support student needs
  • Participate in on-going professional development and develop a personal growth plan
