Description

The Executive Director (ED) provides strategic, operational, and cultural leadership for the Yellowknife Women’s Society (YKWS). The ED oversees a multi-site housing continuum—including emergency shelter, transitional housing, Spruce Bough supportive living, Housing First, outreach, and training centre operations—ensuring programs are trauma‑informed, culturally safe, and grounded in Indigenous worldviews and harm reduction. The ED reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for advancing the 2023–2028 Strategic Plan.

Responsibilities

1. Strategic and Organizational Leadership

  • Lead implementation of the YKWS 2023–2028 Strategic Plan.
  • Strengthen organizational culture grounded in safety, dignity, and inclusion.
  • Support rebranding and communications modernization.
  • Ensure programs align with Indigenous cultural safety, harm reduction, and decolonizing practice.

2. Operational Oversight of Multi-Site Programs

  • Provide oversight of all housing programs including Women’s Centre, transitional housing, Spruce Bough, Housing First, the Training Centre and Wellness programming.
  • Ensure programs meet safety, policy, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee capital planning, building operations, and multi-site infrastructure.

    • 3. Governance and Board Relations

  • Serve as primary advisor to the Board of Directors.
  • Provide monthly strategic, operational, and financial updates.
  • Support Board recruitment, training, and policy development.
  • Ensure compliance with the NWT Societies Act.

    • 4. Financial Management and Fund Development

  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure long-term sustainability and diversified revenue streams.
  • Lead grant-writing, fundraising, and donor relations.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and risk mitigation systems.

    • 5. Human Resources and Leadership Development

  • Supervise Directors (Housing, Operations, Training, Communications, Finance).
  • Support professional development and trauma-informed supervision.
  • Ensure HR policies reflect safety, equity, and cultural respect.

    • 6. Partnerships, Advocacy and Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain partnerships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments, Elders, and community organizations.
  • Advocate for housing rights, equity, and systemic change.
  • Represent YKWS locally, territorially, nationally, and internationally.

    • 7. Risk Management and Safety

  • Oversee organizational risk framework.
  • Ensure physical, emotional, and cultural safety across all programs.
  • Lead crisis response and emergency protocols.
  • Ensure accountability mechanisms are in place for staff performance, program compliance, and organizational standards.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, territorial, and municipal funding agreements, including reporting requirements, timelines, and performance obligations.

    • Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in Indigenous Studies, Public Health, Social Work, Community Development, Public Administration, Leadership, or a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and extensive senior leadership experience may be considered at the discretion of the Board.
  • Minimum 5 years’ senior leadership experience in social services, housing, or Indigenous / community organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience working with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.
  • Strong organizational, financial, and crisis management skills.
  • Experience leading teams in trauma-informed, high-demand environments.
  • Clear commitment to anti-racism, decolonization, and equity.
  • Lived or living expertise is recognized as a strength.
  • Knowledge of TRC Calls to Action, UNDRIP, MMIWG Calls for Justice, and National Housing Strategy Act is an asset.
