Job Summary

This role is responsible for promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations at a licensed production facility in Pemberton, BC. Acting as a subject matter expert, the HSE Specialist provides hands-on support and strategic guidance, working cross-functionally to lead safety programs, investigate incidents, conduct training, and maintain regulatory compliance. This is an onsite role reporting to the Director, Health, Safety & Environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the go-to advisor for leadership on health, safety, and environmental (HSE) matters.
  • Promote a safety-first culture by identifying hazards and recommending improvements.
  • Develop and maintain HSE programs that comply with regulatory and internal standards.
  • Lead and document thorough incident investigations; ensure timely implementation of corrective actions.
  • Analyze incident and near-miss data to identify risks and propose preventive measures.
  • Deliver engaging safety training, including new hire orientations and refresher courses.
  • Collaborate with HR on WorkSafeBC claims, modified duties, and return-to-work planning.
  • Ensure proper and safe use of tools / equipment, including inspections and maintenance.
  • Organize and support Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings and workplace inspections.
  • Conduct regular site audits, ergonomic assessments, hazard analyses, and PPE compliance checks.
  • Assist with emergency response planning, including drills and evacuation procedures.
  • Stay up-to-date on evolving HSE regulations and best practices, applying updates to local programs.
  • Track and report on HSE metrics through reports and dashboards.
  • Drive employee engagement by encouraging participation in safety initiatives.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • 3–5 years of HSE experience.
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety (or related field) preferred.
  • CRSP designation is an asset.
  • Industry experience in manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or food production is an asset.
  • Experience in delivering HSE training and facilitating engagement across teams.
  • Proven success in leading incident investigations and implementing corrective actions.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office; familiarity with incident reporting tools is an asset.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of Canadian HSE regulations (WSBC, WSIB, WHMIS, etc.).
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and presentation abilities.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams and prioritize safety.
  • Skilled in problem-solving, decision-making, and emergency response.
  • Comfortable working in both office and production environments, including use of PPE.
