About the Position
Under the direction of the Senior Lifeguards (and the Supervisor of Aquatics and Recreation Programs), the Swim Coach is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating high-quality swim training sessions for participants of varying ages and abilities. This role promotes a safe, positive, and development-focused environment by teaching technical skills, fostering teamwork, and ensuring the well-being of all swimmers. The Swim Coach must maintain constant awareness of swimmer safety and provide effective instruction that aligns with Niagara Regional Summer Swim League (N.R.S.S.L.) standards.
Duties & Responsibilities

Develop, prepare, and deliver structured swim training programs and skill progressions appropriate to participant levels, focusing on technique, endurance, and performance.
Maintain constant surveillance of swimmers and patrons to ensure safety, responding to incidents and emergencies according to City procedures, including administering first aid when required.
Provide constructive feedback and foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful team environment that supports confidence, motivation, and skill development.
Demonstrate proper stroke mechanics, starts, turns, conditioning drills, and other technical skills relevant to coaching.
Communicate regularly with swimmers, parents/guardians, and staff regarding schedules, expectations, progress, and program information.
Maintain the physical fitness necessary to perform coaching demonstrations, respond to emergencies, and complete required in-service training.
Understand and execute all facility policies, emergency procedures, and operational protocols, using sound judgment and critical thinking.
Assist with organizing and supporting events such as time trials, clinics, swim meets, and recreational canal supervision when applicable.
Complete routine facility duties including setup and takedown of equipment, maintaining clean and safe spaces, water testing, and general upkeep of equipment and public areas.
Complete administrative tasks as assigned, including attendance, progress reports, and other program-related documentation.
Perform other related duties as assigned to support aquatic operations and coaching activities.
What you need to Succeed...
Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C Certification.
Valid National Lifeguard Certification (Lifesaving Society).
Valid Swim for Life Instructor Certification (Lifesaving Society).
Valid High Five: Principles of Healthy Childhood Development Certification.
Vulnerable Sector Police Check (as per the City’s Police Background Check procedure).
Lifesaving Instructor certification is considered an asset.
Standard First Aid Instructor certification is considered an asset.
National Lifeguard Instructor certification is considered an asset.
National Lifeguard – Waterfront certification is considered an asset.
National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is considered an asset.
Salary and Benefit Information
$21.48 - $22.33 (2026 Rate) Plus OMERS pension is available
