Overview
Your Opportunity : The Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre is 70 km south of Edmonton. This facility provides services to the residents of the city and county of Wetaskiwin, and the four Bands of Maskwacis. Population catchment area is approximately 35,000. This is an acute care facility with attached LTC, and is the only collection site for community patients. This is a working level supervisor position utilizing technical skills and judgement performing a diverse range of diagnostic procedures within the Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Cardiology and Specimen Procurement departments within the scope of practice of an MLT. Working within a team environment this position is responsible for overall Lab functions at the site which include but are not limited to : organizing / coordinating resources and supervising a team of MLTs and MLA’s to assure quality operations, ensuring the performance of high quality tests, monitoring daily processes and taking appropriate preventative or corrective action when required, quality monitoring and review of all laboratory processes conducted on site, technical trouble shooting, ordering / maintenance of supply inventory, reviewing / monitoring financial, personnel and statistical reports, implementing site based procedures, liaising with other hospital departments, personnel and physicians, ensuring safe work practices are followed, investigation of safety incidents and concerns, development / maintenance of staff schedules and occasional rotation re-design following program changes, as well as time approval. Be involved in staff recruitment. Complete annual performance appraisals with staff in conjunction with the clinical supervisor. Coordinate the education and orientation of staff and students. Schedule and lead regular staff meetings, action outcomes of the meeting, and post minutes for staff. Fiscal management of all resources.
Position Description
As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) II, you will coordinate the day-to-day operations and the quality control function of the laboratory. You may have advanced technical knowledge or are the lead responsible for coordinating the day-to-day operations of Laboratory Information System (LIS) support, site education, quality assurance or laboratory research programs. Your responsibilities may include coordinating, prioritizing, monitoring and assigning work to MLT l's, providing technical advice, problem solving and trouble shooting on a variety of laboratory instruments. In addition, you will participate in the technical aspects of the laboratory, ensuring the performance of standard and specialized procedures.
Required Qualifications
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).
Additional Required Qualifications
For an MLT evidence of CSMLS certification will be required. Completion of an accredited MLT program and active registration with the CMLTA will be required. The ability to effectively communicate in English. Minimum of 5 years full time laboratory experience. Proven success performing supervisory functions in a diagnostic setting. Demonstrated desire and actions to further own knowledge relating to profession. Demonstrated experience with method or equipment evaluations including statistical analysis. Training and / or demonstrated experience related to quality improvement, conflict resolution and customer service. Extensive experience in use of computer systems, software applications. Experience in performing incident investigations and implementing corrective actions. Experience with Accreditation standards, implementation and addressing deficiencies. Demonstrated experience and or knowledge of Laboratory Safety practices. Ability to give and receive constructive feedback. Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload, direct work assignments, and adapt to stressful situations using tact and diplomacy. Ability to influence others through well-developed oral and written communications. Ability to interpret, explain and apply applicable legislation, standards, policies and procedures. Receptive to new ideas and change. Good working knowledge of the HSAA collective agreements. Ability to work independently and within a team, effectively managing his / her time.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience. Completion of leadership courses, including effective team building and conflict resolution. Experience with development and supervision of effective teams. Use of many software applications including Epic connect / Care, e-people, i-Expense, Microsoft Word, Excel, Soft Tech, My Safety Net and Sharepoint. Recent experience in a TM testing laboratory.
