Grocery Manager

Summary

Reporting to the Foodstore Manager, the Grocery Manager will be a key player on the Co-op Management team. The Grocery Manager will work in conjunction with the Foodstore Manager in the management and control of the Grocery department with the primary responsibilities focusing on the various retail activities of the Co-operative.The Grocery Manager’s key accountabilities are to oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the Grocery Department, while effectively managing both departmental operations and staff, achieving financial performance targets, and delivering exceptional member service.

Responsibilities

1. Budgeting & Financial Management

Lead, organize, direct and co-ordinate the activities and functions of the Grocery Department to meet or exceed financial objectives including : sales targets, gross margin targets, sales per employee hour, labour costs, operating costs and inventory turns.

Additional financial management activities include :

  • Process invoices, claims, and reports as necessary to maintain accurate financial records.
  • Ensuring the precision of shelf label information, prices, PLU codes, and other relevant data.
  • Adhering to company policy regarding proper transferring and markdown records, maintaining meticulous records for transparency and compliance.

2. Sales and Marketing

Manage the resources of the grocery department to generate net savings that meet the budgeted targets. This can be accomplished by :

  • Controlling expenses to ensure that resources are used effectively;
  • Effectively administering policies and procedures to ensure profitability;
  • Assisting the Foodstore Manager with completion of the annual team book; and

    Ensuring all advertising and promotional activity follows the Co-op Retailing System’s guidelines.

    3. Merchandising

    Responsible for maintaining proper merchandising and housekeeping standards in the Grocery Department :

  • Present a neat clean, well merchandised Department;
  • Supervise the promotional activities at store level, including the building of displays, arrangements for in-store demonstrations, use of POP material; and

  • Ensure merchandise is properly faced at all times.
  • 4. Inventory Management

    To be responsible for the procurement of merchandise and using good inventory management practices. This includes :

  • Procuring orders from approved and preferred suppliers;
  • Review promotional orders to guarantee adequate inventory levels are acquired to sustain in-stock positions throughout promotional periods;
  • Placing orders in a timely manger, to meet designated deadlines;
  • Ensuring that sufficient seasonal merchandise to accommodate seasonal demands;
  • Achieving budgeted inventory turnover rates through effective management practices;
  • Ensuring proper handling of merchandise to maintain quality and integrity; and
  • Overseeing accurate inventory counts to facilitate precise stock management.
  • 5. Personnel Management

    Oversee and provide the day-to-day management of personnel in the grocery / stock department.

  • This includes : Recruitment functions including resume screening, interviewing and hiring;
  • Following established human resource polices and procedures;
  • Motivating staff to perform their job and duties towards common objectives while serving as a role model to other employees;
  • Maintaining a positive work environment with strong morale;
  • Ensuring staff have a clear understanding of their job descriptions, expectations, company policies and procedures as well as departmental goals and programs;
  • Identifying when progressive corrective action is necessary and working with the Foodstore Manager and Human Resources on determine the appropriate course of action;
  • Providing leadership, coaching, training and development to staff;
  • Conducting year-end performance reviews;
  • Adherence and understanding of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, territorial, and federal legislation, including all health and safety legislation.

    6. Department Management

    Responsible for the effective and efficient management of the Department, including :

  • Holding weekly informational departmental meetings and attending weekly management meetings;
  • Completing weekly scheduling in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement; and

    Identifying and scheduling the training needs of grocery staff, including both in-person and online training sessions, to support continuous skill development and compliance with industry standards.
