Position Overview
The Community Mental Health Worker (CMHW) provides psychosocial assessment, consultation, and evidence‑informed counselling to individuals referred to the mental health program. The CMHW assists individuals and families to maximize independence, self‑responsibility, and promote personal wellness, community integration, and social justice. The position requires a comprehensive knowledge base of trauma‑informed psychiatric care, crisis management, suicide intervention, and an ability to integrate these skills into practice.
Responsibilities
- Provide psychosocial assessment and mental status examinations.
- Deliver evidence‑based therapy to children and adolescents using models such as CBT, DBT, and Brief Treatment.
- Conduct case management functions including functional assessment, skill development, relapse prevention, and rehabilitation.
- Collaborate with primary health care providers, specialists, families, and agencies involved in child / adolescent mental health.
- Work within a collaborative care structure to deliver time‑limited, goal‑oriented, change‑focused interventions and consultations.
- Maintain competency through ongoing education and adherence to Southern Health‑Santé Sud policies and professional standards.
- Prepare written communication, diagnostic impressions, and crisis intervention plans.
- Work culturally informatively within a diverse range of cultures.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and service sector collaboration.
Experience
Minimum of two (2) years providing evidence‑based therapy to children and adolescents (3–5 years preferred).Minimum of two (2) years of supervised counselling experience.Experience and training in trauma‑informed care, Brief Treatment models, CBT, DBT, etc.Experience in completing psychosocial assessments and mental status examinations.Education
Graduate of an accredited post‑secondary education in Health‑Related Social Sciences (e.g., BSW, BScMH, BScPN, BN, RPN). Other relevant qualifications may be considered.Master’s degree considered an asset; qualified as a Psychiatric Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Clinical Social Worker, Family Therapist, or equivalent.Training in clinical assessment, case formulation, psychotropic medications, psychopathology, and individual / group / family / systems intervention.Certification / Licensure / Registration
Active licence and registration to practice as required by the professional association and provincial legislation.Certificate in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) or equivalent.Qualifications and Skills
Knowledge of child and adolescent development and mental health issues, including suicide risk assessment and management.Advanced mental health psychosocial assessment skills and understanding of evidence‑informed counselling models.Knowledge of recovery principles, co‑occurring mental health and substance use disorders, and psychotropic medications.Proficiency with MS Office and telehealth technologies.Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.Ability to prepare written communication and crisis intervention plans.Culturally informed practice and collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.Fluency in both official languages is essential for bilingual positions.Strong confidentiality practices and a good work and attendance record.Valid Class 5 driver’s licence, an all‑purpose insured vehicle, and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.Physical Requirements
