The Medical Director, Seniors Health is an island-wide leadership position working with a team that provides clinically expert advice and strategic vision for the organization.
The team includes subject matter experts in seniors care and the Community Virtual Care program. With the Director dyad partner, the Medical Director works proactively with others (including patients) to foster a culture of elder-friendly care and continuous quality improvement across all care settings : acute care, ED’s, community, LTC, and rural and remote settings.
This position reports to an Executive Medical Director and Executive Director.
Main responsibilities of this position :
Leadership : works with co-lead to set strategic priorities for the program, aligned with organizational priorities, to sustain care transformation within Island Health and beyond.
This includes being an active participant in relevant Clinical Governance tables.
- Operations & Quality : keeps up to date on current and emerging best practices in excellent seniors and virtual care. The Medical Director collaborates with other leaders, medical staff, and clinicians to promote quality improvement and research informing seniors’ health care.
- Change Management : acts as a change management catalyst to engage and support physicians and staff through change. The Medical Director addresses ageism by personalizing seniors’ experiences, and by sharing stories and data.
- Informatics : Supports team activities that advance technology and data use to improve service delivery using the electronic health records (EHR) in collaboration with the Quality Systems team.
- Planning : Assesses, monitors and anticipates team needs and works with medical leaders and administrative leaders to prioritize these needs within available resources.
The Medical Director offers mentorship and provides guidance to four Medical Leads who are direct reports, and meets annually and individually with Medical Leads to set performance deliverables and conduct performance reviews.

Qualifications include :
- Active member of the Island Health Medical Staff
- Preference given to those with relevant experience in geriatric medicine, including familiarity with the complex interdisciplinary needs of frail older adults, and a keen interest in improving elder care services.
